In the context of an individual game, 1st downs obviously matter more to the outcome, but I suspect they're more susceptible to variance over the course of the season than receptions are, and that the variance isn't predictable or indicative of talent.
But, I'd also very much enjoy winning a game based on a huge 7 first down performance out of an RB, so I'm fine with whatever.
