Hasn't Chapo been mentioned a lot?

It's my #2 after Michael and Us.

Lots of us think that the humor is often unfunny, especially when they're doing pre-written bits. The Dungeons & Dragons campaign thing on the paid feed was a slog.

When they're just talking though they're great, and often funny.

Hardest of disagrees, I'm not even into D&D and the Tabletop Game Theory episodes have all been fantastic. Will grant this recent one was a little over-long, but the TGTs have given me some of the best laughs Chapo has ever delivered, up there with Enter The Noid and Michael Flynn hitting the back walls.

I was a bit meh about the earlier tabletop ones, they were OK. I thought the most recent two were a step up. The production has improved, they were maybe the best-produced eps ever.

Glad you liked them, maybe I need to actually try to pay attention to them more.

But yea, should be shorter at least (even if spread across more episodes).
01-10-2019 , 02:26 AM
I just can’t do them, they lost me on those on the early ones.

Tabletop Game Theory is an acquired taste imo. I'm a P&P RPG player. So I can enjoy those episodes a bit more than the average person. But for those who either dislike D&D style games or don't know what they are, it can be pretty dull or confusing.

Honestly, some of the best fun I've had was at D&D sessions.

CTH is hit or miss with me. Either I'm dying laughing or bored. Their Christmas episode (It's A Willderful Life) was excellent.

It's rare that there's a reading series that I don't enjoy.

I've caught up on a pile of Chapo, I listen while going for walks and whatnot. I probably have like 25 eps left. After I've heard them all I might do a best reading series list. My favourite character in the Chapo mythos is Rod Dreher. He's a complex and compelling bad guy, like Cersei in GOT. He's ultimately evil, but when you hear his origin story, you see how he got like he is and at times I have sympathy for him. It's the sign of a well-drawn villain.

I tried the most recent CTH and ultimately enjoyed it. then I tried a pre-written one and it was not listenable. When they're just ranting about politics, it's good stuff.

vox's today explained is generally OK (the music can be highly annoying), but the January 8th episode (about Trump's decision to withdraw from Syria) is great.

Having read a fair number of Thomas' opinions, I find Robin's take highly suspect. He could be right in some borderline sense, but all I see in Thomas' opinions is standard issue conservative over-literalism with some additional anger and resentment undergirded by typical conservative religious ideology. He did truly hate Yale, I think because he believes he's been stigmatized by affirmative action and the condescension of "well-meaning" whites. That's a more nuanced take than "black people shouldn't be given preferences", but it's not that nuanced of a take, and Thomas is a lot worse on most other legal issues. (But, to be fair, he wouldn't be on the SCt if it weren't for a very big dose of affirmative action--there ain't no affirmative action that is more affirmative than that for black conservatives.)

Love their reading series. Whether it's an article about Iraqi dinar scams or Ben Shapiro's novel, I'm always left in stitches.

New episode of the Lawfare Podcast with excellent discussion of Trump/Russia. http://lawfare.libsyn.com/greg-mille...ican-democracy [url]

Was taped before the recent NYT bombshell re FBI counterintel investigation of Trump, but that in way detracts from it, and they just did an "emergency podcast" on the counterintel investigation.

Recent Chris Hayes podcast with a community organizer for poor whites in rural Trump Country. Not a world I have experience with, but an interesting topic off the beaten path of regular news. A compelling interview. https://art19.com/shows/why-is-this-...th-chris-hayes

Just finished Dr Death. The guy is strikingly like Trump, just living a completely different life. Total narcissist with no ability to see any of his shortcomings or failings.

The girl (Amber?) absolutely ruins Chapo for me when she’s on. Not funny, super annoying and arrogant, not insightful, just awful.
01-16-2019 , 09:51 AM
She varies a bit depending on how stoned she is. She's unbearable while high. When not high she brings some knowledge but yeah, she's still not great.
01-16-2019 , 01:05 PM
Nah, Amber's great. Agree she's annoying when very stoned, but that's not that often. Always glad when she's on.

chapo would be good if the episodes were 20 min long. the get repetitive and boring at >1h.

the weeds is very good but jane coaston is boring and seems to think twitter is the real world. ezra klein is boring too at times.

worldly, or whatever the vox podcast about world news is called, is incredibly trash

Every time I’ve tried a Vox podcast I’ve bailed after 5 mins or less.

The most recent weeds on optimal tax rates scratched me right where I itch.

Most things would be better shorter.

I'm now totally overwhelmed after adding The Sitdown w/ Mike Recine regular and premium, plus missing a bunch of days of listening due to vacation. Something's gonna have to give soon.

on the latest 538 politics podcast (Gillibrand episode) there's a shocking moment when Nate makes an underpants gnome reference and ... nobody gets it

Thanks to whomever suggested Ear Hustle. Great podcast.

And the host got pardoned by Jerry Brown.

thought this was hilarious when I heard it because the only place I knew it from was 2p2 and figured that was why nate thought it was mainstream.
