I found out yesterday that in my state traffic tickets generated from a "red light camera" are not obligated to be paid by the driver. A red light camera is set up at an intersection with a stoplight to catch people running red lights - if it catches you, you receive a picture of your car in the intersection after the light turned red as proof. If you don't pay, there are no legal ramifications, nothing with insurance - no tangible downside at all.

So given the above, I was curious how many people would pay these fines and how may would not. See poll.

FTR, there were about 750K of these RLC tickets issued and about 425K were paid.

wouldn't pay fine but would donate an equivalent amount to Bernie 2020

Here you don't lose points on your license or impact your insurance b/c they can't prove who was driving, but owner of the plate caught on camera has to pay before they can renew their tags. In your situation I doubt I'd pay.

In the UK it's a strict liability offence with a £100 fine & 3 points on your licence...Which means No 2nd chances for letting emergency vehicles through.

Only way to appeal and get off is to prove the lights were faulty or you did not actually go through the red light.

They contact the owner by letter, ask for an admission of guilt or to name who was driving...

I'll be honest, No Dam no..99% of UK folk would not pay, I believe... me included.

I’d wager that you misread something, are misinterpreting something, or the person that wrote the article you are reading is misreading something or misinterpreting something.

Nah, its not really a subtle point of the law - no one disputes that the tickets are not enforceable. Here's the way a lawmaker said to handle the tickets:

No and I'd start running red lights.

I'd start running red lights even when I wanted to turn.

In Britain we can get off the fine by pretending to be politicians and switching driver's seat.

redlight cameras are communist and a MAGAt could legit compete for my vote by running on the single issue of banning them forever
11-13-2018 , 02:55 PM
honestly if you're not constantly running red lights like me and OP then you're a sheep and a coward

If that's a reference to the politician who did that then he ended up in prison over it.

But still got off the fine.

And I doubt very much the MPs prosecuted for it so far are the only ones doing it.

Putting your granmother on your insurance for £120 a year can be worth it, if you drive for a living, same as registration of a Private Hire taxi plate for your vehicle in London to save paying that congestion toll....

I'm sure many have done it. The trick is not to then annoy the other person so much that they're willing to go to jail just to get you.

There's a new one. I was talking about Huhne but this has appeared on the BBC front page

A Labour MP plotted with her brother to evade a speeding prosecution, a court has heard.

Fiona Onasanya claimed a Russian man was behind the wheel when her Nissan Micra was clocked doing 41mph in a 30mph zone in July last year, jurors at the Old Bailey were told.

Ms Onasanya, 35, denies one count of perverting the course of justice.

Prosecutor David Jeremy QC said the MP and her brother Festus Onasanya had "acted jointly in telling lies".

The court was told Ms Onasanya, who is the MP for Peterborough, was sent a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) after her car was clocked by a speed camera in Thorney, near Peterborough, on 24 July last year.
