Re: Paul Manafort

Uh, WTF.

Quote:
Specifically, contrary to Manafort’s assertions about his jail conditions, Manafort is in a private unit in which he can review materials and prepare for trial*. Moreover, he is not confined to a cell. Between the hours of 8:30am to 10:00pm, Manafort has access to a separate workroom at the jail to meet with his attorneys and legal team. Visitor logs from the prison indicate that each week Manafort has had multiple visits with his legal team.

Manafort also has a personal telephone in his unit, which he can use over twelve hours a day to speak with his attorneys. According to prison telephone logs, in the last three weeks Manafort has had over 100 phone calls with his attorneys, and another 200 calls with other persons. Those telephone logs indicate Manafort has spoken to his attorneys every day, and often multiple times a day. Manafort also possesses a personal laptop that he is permitted to use in his unit to review materials and prepare for trial. The jail has made extra accommodations for Manafort’s use of the laptop, including providing him an extension cord to ensure the laptop can be used in his unit and not just in the separate workroom.

* Among the unique privileges Manafort enjoys at the jail are a private, self-contained living unit, which is larger than other inmates’ units, his own bathroom and shower facility, his own personal telephone, and his own workspace to prepare for trial. Manafort is also not required to wear a prison uniform. On the monitored prison phone calls, Manafort has mentioned that he is being treated like a “VIP.”

Re: Paul Manafort

If he gets pardoned he can still be compelled to testify and can't take the 5th.

since that's more than one step ahead of where he is right now, i'm positive he hasn't considered it

Manafort sounds like the type of character who has gotten away with so much for so long that he comes to believe he's invincible. (His daughter's instant messaging posts leaked to the internet appear to confirm this unflattering portrayal of her father.) The late Dominick Dunne wrote about people like Manafort. According to Dunne, privileged people delude themselves into believing they can get away with anything. They believe the rules don't apply to them.

I would love to see the look on Manafort's face when the jury pronounces him "Guilty" on enough counts to send him up the river for 200 years. Manafort's lawyers are probably stroking his ego telling him he has a good chance of beating the rap and the prosecutors are dummies. Manafort is delusional enough to believe them.

Of course, it only takes one of twelve jurors to hang a jury, so maybe Manafort knows something we don't ...

you don't think the same russian intelligence service that kills britons with nerve agent in london would intimidate any jurors, do you?

Re: Paul Manafort

Uhhhh is the source for that legit? Holy ****. A follow up tweet links to this pdf which has tons and tons of text messages (with unredacted phone numbers, sucks for [Paul Manafort's daughter]!) but no indication of where it came from.

Re: Paul Manafort

I don't know about that alt account but this story looks legit, @natsecgeek is the credit here.

http://emma.best/2018/07/20/a-note-o...anafort-texts/

A post from her on it.

Non manafort note--Wikileaks had these and didn't release them (I know that's SHOCKING). It appears you can also download all of it from that site if you want however you want it (don't know why you would tho, just read the most ridic ones posted and move on).

Well, wikileaks claims it's from ukraine and well yeah, they're probably full of ****. It came from the same trove of reports about when his daughter messaged she thought manafort probably had others killed. It's not a new batch but it wasn't neatly sorted like this till recently, it was probably a giant wall of tl;dr text files before.

There’s still time for him to cut a deal, but it’s coming down to the to the wire. Maybe he’s just really convinced Trump will pardon him.

Re: Paul Manafort

While all these [allegedly] salacious details regarding Manafort's sexual depravities might be interesting to some, I doubt if Mueller will be offering this stuff up to the jury during Manafort's trial. Manafort is being charged with financial crimes - things like tax evasion, wire fraud and illegal money transfers. These are offenses which are fairly easy to prove as there is a paper trail.

Manafort has tended to live what some would describe as an "extravagant" lifestyle - spending considerable sums of money on multiple homes, expensive clothes and jewelry for mistresses, and other ostentatious displays of wealth. Prosecutors have long known that jurors tend to react negatively to defendants like Manafort - especially when they realize that his wealth was stolen, not earned, and he made most of his money dishonestly while they struggle to survive. Skilled prosecutors know how to paint a portrait of Manafort that will engender a feeling of resentment among the jurors.

I'll be surprised if Mueller brings up any of this "sex stuff" during Manafort's trial. The thrust will be more in the nature of portraying Manafort as a greedy bastard who didn't hesitate to break laws in order to enrich himself.

Re: Paul Manafort

I'd be surprised if they brought up the sex stuff because doing so would be a violation of the rules of evidence, as "more prejudicial than probative." This would be grounds for appeal. The lifestyle stuff is probative because it shows he lived in a manner inconsistent with his claimed income and, eg, buying a bunch of fancy rugs is evidence of money laundering. They probably have the rug merchant as one of the witnesses receiving immunity.

He spent like a month in jail...seems like Trump would have already granted him a pardon if he had anything major on him.
