I'm sure you saw the headlines about record numbers that showed up at the gun show in Florida this weekend?

This post is reprehensible.

Do you realize that this post is reprehensible?

Was your goal today to come to 2+2 and post something reprehensible?

Mission accomplished.

(I would kindly suggest that you change your goals going forward. Thank you very much.)

Sitting shiva is a Jewish ritual describing a week-long mourning period for first-degree relatives.

Lot of Jewish people in Parkland I guess?

The Miami-Ft Lauderdale metropolitan area has a big Jewish populace. Lots of families from NY moved there.

This is the most momentum I've ever seen for gun control, even after other tragedies, and the increased support for restrictions is 100% due to some high school kids. These kids are amazing, and are changing out country for the better.

In recent years, even after other tragedies, support for stricter gun control has hovered in the 40%'s to 50%'s. It has spiked recently all the way up to 70% supporting stricter gun control and only 27% opposed.

Will massive change actually happen soon? Maybe, maybe not, but the tide is turning. Small things like bump stocks, and medium things like stricter background check requirements or higher age requirements, may actually happen soon, and other changes like reinstatement of assault weapons bans may eventually come.

I've never been optimistic about gun control previously, but I am cautiously optimistic now. The NRA and the right's stupid, horrible arguments are being exposed for what they are, even to the right's base.

Trump, ****stain that he is, is still saying things about supporting the NRA, but is also now saying things like, not to be afraid of the NRA, and that "If they're not with you, we have to fight them every once in a while. Sometimes we're going to have to be very tough, and we're going to have to fight them." I don't believe it, of course, but the fact that he even feels compelled to say these things shows just how far public opinion is moving, even among conservatives.

And it's all due to those meddling kids. Bravo, Parkland kids. Bravo.

Yep. I used to travel to WPB a lot with my ex, and we'd always go somewhere for breakfast on Saturday or Sunday morning and it was the only area outside of NY where I've tasted decent matzo ball soup and latkas. It seemed like all the mom and pop greasy spoons served Jewish food.

Hey Rara,

Emma Gonzalez now has over a million followers on Twitter and more than 2x the followers the NRA has. Can you please explain how a gun show over the weekend impacted that?
02-26-2018 , 10:51 PM
But did you know twitter followers can be bought and paid for? Rara knows that isn’t happening but it’s something we should all think about

It is being reported that Congress is struggling to pass universal background checks and that raising the age to buy assault rifles is now off the table.

Money > powerhouse kids & a (social) media movement

I think we all understand that the power of a democracy comes from voters voting in a new batch of electees when current politicians are unable to keep up when popular sentiment shifts.

It is not at all surprising that those two things can and do co-exist.
02-27-2018 , 06:44 PM
Thats one possibility.

The other is that the system is so corrupted by money and lobbying that "democratic " is not the best eay to describe it.

The writers for The Federalist are all much, much more stupid than every Parkland teen.

Yea nothing will change til November. Meanwhile, the GOP's best hope is that there's no mass shooting by then.

*No mass shooting by a non-Muslim/non-illegal immigrant.

Eyebooger posted this in the cold dead hands gun thread, but I wanted to post a quote from it that is relevant to this thread.

The CEO says they made these policy changes because of the Parkland kids:

Quote:
Discussing the possible repercussions for Dick’s, Stack pointed to the courage of those students, many of whom are responsible for mobilizing and organizing gun control rallies, marches and social media-inspired boycotts.

"When we take a look at what those kids and the parents and the heroes in the school, what they did, our view was if the kids can be brave enough to organize like this, we can be brave enough to take these out of here," he said of the guns.
Parkland Kids: This time really is different.
