Online Sales (Supreme Court Ruling) Online Sales (Supreme Court Ruling)

Supreme Court decides 5-4 that states can tax things you buy online. Get ready, things you buy online will start to get more expensive as states now find a way to get much needed income.

It was the four Conservatives (and Ginsburg) on the Court that voted to allow the tax.

Seems quite reasonable. Why should online sales be privileged versus in store sales?

The Court didn't say it was "reasonable". In fact, it's pretty unreasonable, small internet businesses are not going to be able to navigate all the different tax laws.

But SCOTUS (almost entirely) felt that the two previous cases which decided that cross-state internet sales tax did not need to be collected by the vendor, were decided incorrectly, and it should be up to Congress to decide, not SCOTUS. The minority felt that the previously decided cases should stand until Congress fixed them with a law, the majority felt that SCOTUS needed to reverse the previous decisions, and Congress is free to take up the issue.

Maybe things will become cheaper, as tax avoidance schemes stop working and the states can lower the tax rate on people who have always been paying sales tax.

pretty good for amazon, which already collects it voluntarily. Lowers competition from minor ecommerce companies without hurting them.
