In October 2003 the creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening, revealed that Fox News had threatened to sue Fox Entertainment - which makes the show - over the satirical use of rolling ticker lines on the screen. "Pointless news crawls up 37 per cent... Do Democrats cause cancer? Find out at foxnews.com... Rupert Murdoch: Terrific dancer... Dow down 5,000 points... Study: 92 per cent of Democrats are gay... JFK posthumously joins Republican Party... Oil slicks found to keep seals young, supple...," read the ticker on the program that sparked the threat. "Fox said they would sue the show and we called their bluff because we didn't think Rupert Murdoch would pay for Fox to sue itself. We got away with it.... But now Fox has a new rule that we can't do those little fake news crawls [tickers] on the bottom of the screen in a cartoon because it might confuse the viewers into thinking it's real news," Groening told National Public Radio. Fox denied that it threatened legal action. [25]

Of course Groening called the bluff. Simple math problem imo. We covered this in another thread when Family Guy made fun of Trig Palin and Momma Grizzly or whatever she's called made public pleas to 'Fox Hollywood' to be nicer.

But ldo Murdoch isn't going to mess with his billion dollar cash cows, so The Simpsons/FG/etc. basically have carte blanche. According to this, FNC had 834 million dollars in revenue in 2008.

Contrast to The Simpsons:

Quote:
Consumers worldwide spent more than $750 million on Simpsons-related licensed merchandise last year, about half of that coming from the U.S., Fox says.

In addition, advertisers spent $314.8 million last year on the prime-time show on Fox and reruns that local stations air, according to research firm TNS Media Intelligence.
The Simpsons is almost surely worth more to NewsCorp than FNC, probably not close. At least in the near term value, but The Simpsons should stay pretty evergreen for a couple of generations.

The study was conducted by WorldPublicOpinion.org, a project that is managed by the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland.

According to the study, which can be reviewed online, in most cases, the more a person watched and read the news, the less likely they were to have been misled about the facts. But “there were however a number of cases where greater exposure to a news source increased misinformation on a specific issue,” the study’s authors wrote. In particular, they found that regular viewers of the Fox News Channel, which tilts to the right in prime time, were significantly more likely to believe untruths about the Democratic health care overhaul, climate change and other subjects.

That would be the same Family Guy they cancelled, right?

The same Fox that has had spats with Groening over the years on Merch saturation and creative direction and cancelled his baby Futurama out of spite?

They have a lot of free reign, sure, but when the command comes from on high even they know when to listen.

yeah, they've just been warming up the act for a few years now. What do you figure nick, another 2, maybe 3 years before the first responders really need the aid? Lots of time left for the Conservative Christian Right to debate the merits of the 9/11 responders, atleast a few more rounds of campaign fundraising before the vote will close the issue.

lol obviously.

Andonce it does pass, a year of sitting on their hands and refusing to act for purely political reasons while first responders and their families are crippled by uncertainty will be erased.

It's going to pass eventually idiots. Obviously. Why you crying? Stop sobbing between coughs. Jesus. Cry babies.

Here's an interesting 26 page report/survey of the opinions of voters, their source of information, and what information various media outlets convey: Misinformation and the 2010 Election. (PDF format)

Looks interesting, I bet some of you could find some great information here.

I wonder if the 17% of Dems that do not think its clear whether obama was born in the US overlap with the 21% of Dems that disapprove of his performance.

Re: Official MSNBC/Fox/CNN/cable news containment thread

Some good segments on hardball lately

Chris Matthews: “I Don’t Think Democrats Want To Stop” Illegal Immigration

Quote:
Declaring he doesn’t trust either party on the immigration issue, Matthews stated “Republicans are BS’ing the country” about any plan to deport all illegal immigrants out of the country, and much more surprisingly, he next targeted Democrats. Calling the Democrats “weak,” Matthews said Democrats won’t say “how they will stop illegal immigration . . . I don’t even think they want to stop it . . . they like it.”
Chris Matthews: Why Doesn’t Obama Say ‘Send Me A Copy’ Of My Birth Certificate Right Now

Quote:
I don’t understand why the Governor doesn’t just say ’snap it up . . . send me a copy right now.’ And why doesn’t the President just say ’send me a copy right now.’ Why doesn’t Gibbs and Axelrod say ‘let’s just get this crappy story dead.’

Because it's beneath the dignity of the Presidency, something George W. Bush worked so hard to restore after those awful Clinton years.

The birther story is a gift that keeps on giving. When the only people who believe the story are idiots but also idiots that are against you then you keep feeding them rope so they can keep hanging themselves on the issue.

Yeah, to rebunk it would take way more time than im willing to put in. A lot of stuff is questionable just from the parts of that video ive seen.

Anyway, this isnt even close to the first study on knowledge of politics and world events where Fox viewers perform poorly, trying to debunk that study seems and exercise in pointlessness to me.

It just seems to me that this study's "correct" answers are based a lot on opinion and specuation. Fox viewers aren't misinformed about the information in this study, they just have a different opinion about the way the economy should work and government spending.

That's the basic element in political discussions though, opinion. And contrary to some, an opinion can't be right or wrong in the general sense, only in the perspective in which its received. Let us not cloud logic and reasoning with political decisions.

I see the birther stuff is flaring back up. Awesome.

Hawaii even had to pass a law saying they dont need to keep responding to people asking more than once to see his birth certificate

I dunno if I'm becoming more of a Stewart fanboy or if they're really just crushing it lately, but I found this bit on the upcoming election for GOP chairman pretty hilarious

Plus the guest last night, Kirsten Gillibrand (senator, D-NY) is a total MILF
