"skippable Bill Maher episodes"...so, Bill Maher episodes?
02-10-2019 , 10:48 AM
Why is there so much hate on Bill Maher? I always watch his show. I like the comedy, the setup, and when I'm not keeping up with politics it covers pretty much everything important that happened since the prior episode.

Can I get a cliffs on why several of you posters don't like him? Or a list with brief explanations of what you view as his hottest takes?

I am not a Maher critic but I assume that his takes on religion in general and Islam in particular will be at the top of the list. Also his obsession with what he perceives as political correctness gone mad. My biggest gripe is that he is ideological on many issues and very often badly informed for someone hosting a show about politics and current events.

He’s an annoying contrarian troll who just tries to get a rise out of people with hot takes.

Fox News Rejects National Ad For Oscar-Nominated Anti-Nazi Documentary
"The film shines a light on a time when thousands of Americans fell under the spell of a demagogue who attacked the press and scapegoated minorities using the symbols of American patriotism," A Night at the Garden director Marshall Curry said in a statement to THR.

Curry added, "It’s amazing to me that the CEO of Fox News would personally inject herself into a small ad buy just to make sure that Hannity viewers weren’t exposed to this chapter of American history.”

Badly informed about what? He's never struck me as woefully ignorant on anything he's talked about on his show. I don't always agree with him, but I do on many subjects. Never has he seemed completely off base about anything he's discussed.

The show and his opinions I'm not really sure how to judge because he's not a journalist and it's not a news show. He's a comedian and it's a comedy show mixed with serious political discourse and of course driven greatly by his own opinions. And the time constraints and setup of the show give limitation to the dialogue. Thing is, even if you find him crass, sleazy, or cheesy, he's never seemed irrational or illogical to me on any subject.

I dunno that I'd say he's obsessed about "PC gone mad" but it is a frequent topic on his show. But even if my view is off and the obsessed description is accurate, I'm not sure I could blame him considering what happened to his show that was on ABC. Weirdly enough, it's arguably the best thing that happened to his career given what has transpired since, and yet he'll still bring the subject up if recent news has delved in it. His monologues on it have never seemed out of touch or off base and are tied in to the event(s).

Annoying contrarian troll? Hot takes?

I've never heard someone refer to him as that before. What exactly did he do or say to earn that description? Also, what are his hot takes? I'm at least vaguely familiar with most of his views since I watch the show all the time, but nothing is sticking out in my mind that I'd say is a hot take so to speak.

I think I have an idea of some things he's said and done that might be considered such, or has damaged his reputation, but I want to see others' opinion on him. Like, what specifically? That's why I asked originally for a list/brief details.

Maher's main crime is being a smug, sanctimonious, unfunny moron. Other than that he's mostly fine.

Off the top of my head, Mahr ****ting on comics right after Stan Lee died was a great example of his shtick. I’m sure you can google other takes that people found objectionable. I get that trolling is funny sometimes, but I think Mahr has no sense of humor or good taste.

I mean, the guy named his show “Politically Incorrect” and you’ve never considered him to be a contrarian?

Unfortunately I can't give you an example off the top of my head. He only has a superficial understanding of many of the topics discussed on his show which in itself isn't too bad if only he were self-aware.
I do watch his show so maybe I can give you a more concrete example in the future.

It is my impression that he is still bitter that he got fired from ABC and that's why leads this crusade against political correctness, deplatforming and perceived threats to free speech.

Amen. Cuomo is so abysmal he makes the rest of that network almost watchable, except for the 35 minutes of ads & promos every hour.

Is medusa still calling him Christopher every 30 seconds ?

Maher is too much of a blowhard for me to tolerate. His show's entertainment value is on par with news shows on CNN/MSNBC/FOX News

Is this really that bad?

Never contrarian, just willing to speak his mind even if his own audience doesn't like what he has to say (it is not uncommon this happens). There is a big difference. The former is pretentious or compulsive, the latter is genuine.
