Re: The Official LOLCANADA Thread

And so is your link.

At the Conservative leadership convention last year, Maxime Bernier finished second, losing on the 13th ballot after leading on the first 12 (there were 14 candidates, and after each round the lowest vote gets booted and they go until someone gets > 50%). Bernier's been a little bitter since then, and yesterday announced he was going to split from the Conservative party and start his own party that would reflect the true conservative values, i.e. things such as cutting carbon taxes, cracking down on refugees and immigration, not being afraid to question abortion and same-sex marriage rights, and not having an antagonistic relationship with Trump.

Here's a little about this great man
Quote:
Bernier, 55, is a self-described libertarian, fiscal and “free-market” conservative. He revels in the “maverick” label. A snappy dresser with a year-round tan, he studied economics, briefly practiced law, supported the Quebec separatist side in the 1995 referendum, and went on to work as an insurance executive and an economic consultant, before running in the 2006 federal election won by Harper’s Conservatives.

As Harper’s foreign affairs minister, he was forced to step down in disgrace after leaving classified documents at the apartment of his then-girlfriend, who had formerly had ties to bikers.

Re: The Official LOLCANADA Thread

Mad Max is better at getting attention than he is at actually getting anything done. This is a big story for people that like political drama but I doubt there will be much impact on the election. I wouldn't be surprised if he actually fails to get an alternative party even registered. He's more suited to run the standard Libertarian grift in Canada than he is to meaningfully change the electoral probabilities.

Re: The Official LOLCANADA Thread

For those who don't click through to the article, they're only banned from talking about it on social media (for now):

Here's the government's official statement:
Quote:
Laryssa Waler-Hetmanczuk, Executive Director of Communications for the Premier's Office, said that she has never given direction not to mention climate change in social media posts.

"I'm responsible for communications, including social media, for the Premier's Office," she said in response to questions about the Ontario Parks email. "I'm not sure who said this or why, but it's categorically untrue."

When asked if she thought the email was fake, she said "I don't quite know why they said this. I’ve never interacted with Ontario Parks directly."

Ford also set up a snitch line for parents to rat out teachers who teach sex ed using the 2015 curriculum instead of the curriculum from 1999. (The government reinstated the 1999 curriculum because, unlike the 2015 version, it doesn't mention bad things that kids shouldn't be learning about such as same-sex marriage, gender and cyberbullying).
Quote:
“We will not tolerate anybody using our children as pawns for grandstanding and political games,” the premier said Wednesday. “Make no mistake, if we find somebody failing to do their job [i.e. teaching about gender issues], we will act.”

Who are all those NDPers ready to make the switch from socialist to Trump-appeasing anti-immigrant libertarian? I guess it's the (white) men under 45.

Remember when the feds spent $4.5 billion to buy a proposed pipeline from Kinder Morgan a few months ago? Yeah, about that...

Meh the pipeline is going through regardless. So they need to clean up the paperwork and re-submit, doesn't seem like that big of a deal, except politically.

I've been to a few and the winning side is usually always wrong. It is also calculated based on a poll before and a poll after and the change not the total votes.

So if 90% believe in side A in the before poll and only 89% in the after poll then side B wins. Also populist morons tend to go to them in addition to smart people and they often change their vote to the dumb debaters on the wrong side who appeal to emotion and not reason.

I have always found it odd that Canada is the second largest county; I guess that makes them conquerers

The Munk Debates is inadvertently sanitizing Steve Bannon in inviting him to participate in a debate on -the rise of populist politics in Western societies.' This is a white washing of Bannon’s racist, misogynistic, and white nationalist agenda....

It is frankly beyond belief that a respected academic endeavour like the Munk Debates would lend its authority and credibility to one of the most treacherous racists of the modern era.

None of this should be up for debate.

Yesterday a PEGIDA rally including the Soldiers of Odin, Northern Guard, and Proud Boys marched down Bay Street in Toronto. Anti-racist activists formed a peaceful line in front of the march, exercising their right to free expression and standing up to racist and neo-Nazi groups. The police called in reinforcements and formed a wedge to push the the anti-racist line back, allowing the hate groups to continue their march. This flies in the face of Canada's commitments to counter hate group activity - not protect it. We will be requesting a meeting with the Toronto Police Service to discuss solutions to this ongoing issue.

It's a little bit weird that Canadians consider themselves patriotic Europeans (the PE in PEGIDA).

"Patriotic Euro" is just a euphemism for "white". Surely you must know this. They aren't major advocates of the economic benefits of the EU or something.

I believe the head of state is actually the Governor General.

We just keep the queen on our money because, you know, reasons.

Re: The Official LOLCANADA Thread

Louis, the preferred term is "old stock Canadians," but I guess when there's already a great group out there like PEGIDA, you don't want to pass up a chance to be associated with them.

What do you mean "they." Don't pretend you're not one of us.

In the 60s, the Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Army were merged into a single entity called the Canadian Armed Forces, but Harper, our most recent Conservative prime minister, undid this horrible slight to the monarchy and restored the names so we could once again be a Royal navy and air force. God Bless the Queen (I think she is the official head of state and the Gov Gen is just her representative in the colony of Canada, but I'm really not that up on my royal protocols).

ETA, according to google (I couldn't have told you the name of our GG until now, though it sounds familiar: Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief in and over Canada. Damn she was an astronaut with two space flights.):
Quote:
The Governor General of Canada is the federal viceregal representative of the Canadian monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II. The person of the sovereign is shared equally both with the 15 other Commonwealth realms and the 10 provinces of Canada, but resides predominantly in her oldest and most populous realm, the United Kingdom. The Queen, on the advice of her Canadian prime minister, appoints a governor general to carry out most of her constitutional and ceremonial duties. The commission is for an unfixed period of time—known as serving at Her Majesty's pleasure—though five years is the normal convention. Once in office, the governor general maintains direct contact with the Queen, wherever she may be at the time.
Meghan Markle, who may someday be my Queen if a few of her in-laws die, used to live about 5 minutes from me and I would often pass by her house on the way to get groceries (though I didn't know she lived there until she was moving to Buckingham Palace or w/e and the house went on the market). I think by the transitive property that makes me Royalty too.

So our Trump-wannabe premier decided to trample on Torontonians’ constitutional rights, just because.

What a time to be alive.
