I don't disagree with you. Again, it feels to me like the natural motivation here to dig all this stuff up will fall on a journalist with a story to tell and books to sell, not on the police. Like, sure, the police should come up with a bunch of resources to assign to task forces, etc., but given how much negative press they're getting for mishandling the Toronto murders I would imagine they are going to see all those theoretically connected cold cases as further embarrassment waiting to be unearthed.

For this family day long weekend, LCBO presents:

No-name beer for $6. Someone braver than me give it a try - I tried Cool Beer and didn't enjoy it.

no name is contracted by loblaws, their stuff is usually pretty good.

There's no chance it's actually any good but it's probably not worse than generic Coors/Bud/Labatt/Molson etc.
02-12-2019 , 06:57 PM
I remember when Dave Nichols put out a line of beers after he stopped being Dave from President's Choice in the early 90s

Bought them at least a couple of times. Can't remember if they were any good, but I imagine no worse than Labatt and Molson.

True story, the best tasting non alcoholic beer on the market is PC blonde, it is an overwhelming winner on taste panels for initial taste as well as for rebuying cases (most non alcoholic beers suffer from being disgusting after a couple sips.)

I actually buy it from time to time. I find it gives me extra energy and tastes pretty good
02-12-2019 , 07:13 PM
I drink that. Great in the summer after doing some work in the yard when you want a beer but don't want to start drinking. I'll even have it with a curry for dinner.

Yeah, I was referring to the Conservatives in power in Ontario (Rob Ford's bro). Federal election coming up soon. The Libs are mired in scandal as they block a public inquiry into a political interference scandal, and the left wing party hasn't even managed to get the leader they elected in 2017 a seat in Parliament yet (he finally got himself in a byelection that he should win tomorrow). The conservatives had the runner-up in their leadership convention break from the party 6 months-ish ago to start a new populist righter wing party that is now the darling of the white supremacists, so that might split some conservative votes away from the main conservative party.

Maxime is more run of the mill college dorm room libertarian than "far right". When I hear "far right" it makes me think more of the expressly hateful and fascist governments that run backwards countries with uneducated populations like Hungary or the United States.
02-25-2019 , 06:36 AM
Sure, Maxime may not be far right (though he's courting people who don't find the Conservatives right enough and certainly using far right rhetoric), but many of the people who support his PPC party are https://www.thestar.com/politics/fed...t-problem.html

Quote:
What the country’s tiny cadre of neo-Nazis and the broader alt-right movement needed was a politician who could bridge the gap between the mainstream and the far-right fringe — someone who was an unabashed supporter of “Western values,” who would clamp down on immigration and multiculturalism.

That person, they decided, was Maxime Bernier.

Last August, after the long-serving Conservative MP denounced Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “extreme multiculturalism and cult of diversity,” the Ensign Hour hosts perked up. When Bernier declared “the death of political correctness in Canada” to his more than 65,000 Twitter followers, it was heard as a dog whistle.
Quote:
Emil Sosnin was elected to the executive of the PPC’s Thornhill riding association. Posts in his name on an alt-right Facebook group include one that said, “When I have kids, they will not play with n*****s.” (The Star added the asterisks.) Another post, in response to a story about German history, said, “I hope those are tears of Jews.” (Sosnin appears to be a listener of the Ensign Hour. In September, he tweeted about the show, “where is episode NEIN? Need my dose of toxic masculinity #itsokaytobewhite.”) The Star made repeated efforts to contact Sosnin through email and his active social media accounts, but he did not respond.

Joanne Dinelle, an executive on the PPC’s association in the Montreal-area riding of Pierrefonds-Dollard, has posted anti-Muslim comments using the since-deleted Twitter handle @Warrioroftruths. On Nov. 28, she referred to Islam as an “insane radical religion” and reminded her followers that “Our Minister of Immigration is a MUSLIM,” in reference to Ahmed Hussen. Asked about the posts via Twitter, Dinelle told the Star, “I do believe we must take a stand for what we believe in as individuals and every citizen has the right to freedom of expression while supporting their personal beliefs.”

Bernier himself regularly uses language favoured by the alt-right, calling Trudeau a “hypocritical virtue signaller” and denouncing feminism as “a radical left-wing ideology” like “cultural Marxism.”

Andrew Scherer was a horrible choice by the conservatives. They did not pick the guy that could beat Justin. The way Justin is going I would have said he is not beatable a year ago but with the SNC scandal. He is ripe.

I think Pierre Poilievre was a better choice

Do you think Scheer was a good choice? Nothing more than a junior Harper
02-25-2019 , 04:45 PM
Really, there were very few good options, the whole CPC leadership race was a clown show. All I knew about Scheer was that he was an unremarkable Speaker and was marketing himself as Harper Lite, and I couldn’t understand why anyone would think that was a good idea for the party. He wasn’t even the best of a bad lot, it was more right place, right time. And it’s only gotten worse since then.

I don't even know where things stand these days. I assume Trudeau is down because of the SNC-Lavalin debacle, but Cons not able to take full advantage b/c nobody cares about Scheer, and NDP is just floundering around somewhere towards the bottom b/c it's hard to remember they even they exist at the Federal level without a leader in parliament, though I doubt their fortunes change at all if Singh gets elected and maybe their best shot is if he loses and resigns and they can run a new convention leading up to the federal election campaign.

I wonder if we could see a surge by the Greens. The climate seems to be right for it (pardon the pun).
02-25-2019 , 05:05 PM
I wonder how much Greens take from NDP, and if they take a similar amount from Libs. They used to be to the right of NDP on non-environmental issues, but now the two are similar enough that it's a shame they're going to split the left vote indefinitely.
02-25-2019 , 05:42 PM
Green Party 7.3% -> 3 seats (<1% of all seats)
Bloc Quebecois 4.8% -> 12 seats

seems fair
02-25-2019 , 06:48 PM
Bloc only fields candidates in Quebec so it's 4.8% of a total population of 8.4 mil vs Greens who run country wide and get 7.3% of a total population of 36 mil. Trudeau's big campaign promise was electoral reform to move from a first-past-the-post system to proportional representation or a ranked ballot. Once he got elected he was like "lol j/k not gonna happen, suck it."

More accurately, his platform was
Quote:
What did Trudeau’s platform say? Here is the section on electoral reform, in its entirety:

“We will make every vote count.

“We are committed to ensuring that 2015 will be the last federal election conducted under the first-past-the-post voting system. We will convene an all-party Parliamentary committee to review a wide variety of reforms, such as ranked ballots, proportional representation, mandatory voting, and online voting. This committee will deliver its recommendations to Parliament. Within 18 months of forming government, we will introduce legislation to enact electoral reform.”
Which, once he became elected, switched to
Quote:
"Moving towards proportional representation, as a few people wanted, would have been damaging to our stability, to our electoral system. When it was obvious that was really something that was a potential threat to the country, I decided that instead of ticking off an electoral box, I was going to stay focused on the things that actually mattered."

By elections today.

NDP lose a seat in Quebec to the Liberals.

NDP leader Singh wins in South Burnaby

Cons hold on in York

NDP are screwed next federal election. I could see them easily losing 1/2 their seats.
