There is a specter haunting the Hamptons — one that’s turning some of the priciest properties in the country into fortresses equipped with bulletproof glass, weaponry and panic rooms.

“I sleep with a gun underneath my pillow: a Walther PPK/S, the same one James Bond carried,” said John Catsimatidis, owner of Red Apple Group and Gristedes Foods, who has a vacation property in East Quogue. “[My wife] Margo prefers a shotgun. Although, once, she thought she heard something, got the shotgun out and shot through the door.”

The billionaire and his family, like others in the Hamptons, are shaken up over concerns that*the vicious Salvadorian gang MS-13*is too close for comfort.
...

Quote:
“People used to open up their garages and show off their Lamborghinis,” Weisberg said. “Now they take guests to the wine bar in their safe room.”

Catsimatidis, who, in addition to worrying about MS-13 has also had his home broken into, is installing infrared sensors at his place.*
... "Take guests to the wine bar in their safe room" has to be one of the more amazing phrases I've heard.

This is a phenomenal argument against anyone who thinks wealth in America is merit-based

At least some of them will shoot each other through doors.

Billionaires acting out terrified right-winger fantasies is cute, complete with a “responsible gun owner” firing a shotgun through the door. Wonder how many servant bodies are buried on the grounds.

My in-laws, who are well off but not wealthy and probably live in one of the safest areas in the country, live in constant fear of break ins and recently bought guns despite us telling them that our daughter will not be in a house with guns (im aware that their pool is a much more present danger but we got a fence put in around that and the baby takes swim lessons). They’ve also been “prepping” for a while now. My MIL told us to “drive to them when something happens.” I asked what exactly she thought was going to happen and got no answer. And these are people who don’t watch Fox News and have disowned the Republican Party for the time being (they will 100% wet themselves with joy of Flake runs for President, I imagine).

Al-Hathloul, a women’s rights activist with thick, dark hair and penetrating brown eyes, had felt her own flood of emotions on that balmy evening one year go, but surprise was not among them. She’d already had days to process the news, having been tipped off to the coming reform by the Saudi government itself. The phone call from the Royal Court, however, had not been a pleasant one: After informing al-Hathloul of the impending announcement, the government official had instructed her to refrain from making any public comment on the reform, even in praise.

...
“We got the impression that they didn’t want activists claiming credit for the change — the message was, this was a top-down decision made by the king, and not a reward for activism,” said one human rights advocate, who asked for anonymity for fear of reprisals. Most complied with the orders, although al-Hathloul took a gamble with a single, seemingly innocuous tweet: “Al-Hamduililah” — thank God. Shortly after, she was contacted by a government affiliate, admonishing her to heed the court’s instructions.
Quote:
For al-Hathloul, this hope would be short-lived. Beginning on May 15, 2018, just weeks before the end of the ban on female drivers, the government began a series of arrests targeting prominent activists. Al-Hathloul was among the first to disappear into custody, along with Eman al-Nafjan and Aziza al-Yousef, fellow advocates for human rights and reform.

I stopped in to see what you guys thought about the most right wing politician in 40 years coming in first in the election today. On the day of the ascendence of a man who very well could be the worst facist of the 21st century, not one word.

WAAF.

In New Zealand right now. This country is embarrassingly better than Australia in every way except GDP per capita or whatever. It's like US/Canada almost exactly.

Social media giants continue to deliver

Felt this was too trivial to post in the Brazil thread, but still relevant to the forum:

"My country is about to elect a leader who will throw me and my husband in prison for being gay. Still... MUST OWN U.S. LIBS."

Dude just can't help it.

I don't get the first of those two tweets - all news coverage suggested Bolsonaro was going to win, and the only question was if it was going to be first ballot or go to a runoff.

Idk he's talking specifically about polls. Maybe this was one all the pundits called correctly even though the polling was bad?

You're taking issue that he's saying that Bolsonaro is significantly worse than Trump, to the extent that "fascist" would not be an exaggeration? Trivial indeed.

Greenwald supporting dictators around the world until he has to suffer the consequences and then it's too late. Right wing in a nutshell.

From what I read there was a poll or two that were wildly off but most had it about right. I assume those polls for whatever reason had an agenda because brazil ain't exactly a full up and up country in the media. That dictator guy insisted that if he didn't win right now it's because it was all rigged of course.

Media making the same mistakes as here framing it as two equal choices, when he's going to KO anyone who isn't blatantly rigged in his favor anyway.

- Protest happening in Portland, people crossing the street with a walk signal
- Driver turns right and drives through the crowd of people, accelerating into a person trying to block his car (there's video)
- This news outlet: "but did you know his Lexus sustained $3,000 in damages?!?"

This is a great story, except... eight years of graduate school. Donna Strickland (recent Nobel Prize) apparently also took 8 years (and was never appointed a full professorship). I know that half of PhD candidates haven't finished after 6 years, but it's like it doesn't matter how good you are. Maybe Freeman Dyson is right about the system.
