The latest on California NIMBYism: Plan to build affordable housing for schoolteachers in wildly expensive San Jose draws outrage

Quote:
Soon after the district announced the nine-school short list on September 27, Greg Braley, a resident of Almaden Valley, started a Change.org petition to “Save Leland and Bret Harte.” (It now has almost 6,000 signatures.) Residents, the petition reads, are “distraught and concerned” about the prospect of teacher housing. “It’s just frankly not in fitting with the rest of the community,” Braley told a local Fox channel. (Braley did not respond to CityLab’s requests for comment.) According to The Mercury News, a recent public meeting to discuss the plan “devolved into angry shouting.”
Quote:
Similar objections were recently raised in nearby Cupertino (average home price: over $2 million) over a plan to transform an abandoned mall into 2,400 housing units, half of which would be affordable. “This would mean that we would have uneducated people living in Cupertino,” one community member said at a meeting. “A lot of other residents and I are concerned that this would make the current residents of Cupertino uncomfortable, and would split our city in half.”
Burn these mother****ers to the ground

Bay Area sounds super sustainable and well-grounded in practical realities.

Too bad their aren't any organizers who could put together a general strike, would be eye opening if everyone who couldn't afford to live in one of those towns didn't show up for work one day.

On the "sustainable" front, that article linked to a report looking at the relationship between home prices and migrant inflow/outflow income delta (the difference in income between people who are leaving and people who are moving in), which appears to show stratification reinforcing itself: expensive areas (shocker) are seeing poorer people replaced with wealthier ones, inexpensive areas are seeing wealthier people replaced with poorer people.

As it relates to SF, I'll let the graph speak for itself:

Grunching but Mets bucket hat guy Mike Dicenzo, who has been a writer with Fallon from the start, is leaving. Fun fact: I know him a little irl, he’s like a friend of a friend.

I had to explain to my mom that she is part of the problem last night. She was filling out her ballot and was saying she just didn’t quite know enough about gillum to vote for him, so she was gonna leave the governor spot blank.

Only democrats do that ****. There are no republicans that are like, well I’m not sure.... they just all pull that red lever all the way down.

I hate to break it to you man, but your mom's just racist.

This is actually also true. She did vote for Obama twice despite that.
10-23-2018 , 11:47 PM

Capitalist media is fascist. Copaganda is a big part of that. Another big part is the sexual objectification of women, the glorification of capitalist military, violence, and exploitation in general, and revisionist history. Add in some demonization of communism/socialism, some glorious nihilism and some needlesss toxic masculinity and you have a recipe for a culture that won't spend its energy fighting back, it will spend its energy pounding the marginalized people into jelly instead. And it will thank the ruling class for the opportunity to do so.

space bryce's posts here elicit an odd mixture of laughter and confusion from me

I'm curious. Has anybody here tried zoning out from politics and the news entirely? If so, how did that work for you? How long were you able to do it? I'm considering trying it myself.

CNN headline is currently some bull**** about Gillum getting illegal Hamilton tickets.

Oh you should really watch it. It's entertaining as hell and it's got a great message. Out on all the platforms now. Glad to hear you're doing well.

What CNN, MSNBC and any mainstream left-wing media outlet will never admit is that they love having Donald Trump as POTUS. It's been great for their business. They have to play the role of the opposition but not be too aggressive as there's a risk of Trump actually losing if they effectively report the news.

I quoted both of these posts because they are strangely related. I am recently afforded an opportunity to apply myself to more completely to this capitalist nightmare by using my skills to solve capitalist problems with the promise of capitalist success and am pretty distressed to find how easy it is to take shelter in the distraction. It has always been such for me, which is why Sorry to Bother You spoke to me so clearly. It is basically my life story. I was a rudderless drifter with no real prospects, no education, and a patchy work ethic who fell into sales and found it interesting. Became very good at it, celebrated for it, eventually feeling worthwhile because of it. But it is pretty clear, as the movie submits, you can't really have it all--engaging in the system at all, even with much greater than average altruism is perpetuating it nonetheless. There is only one way for it to end, really, and we know this, don't we?

But yeah, one good way to zone out from the news it to lose yourself in your work and imagine being "productive" is the same as being useful and good. It is distracting at least.

Bannon, the former CEO for the Trump campaign and erstwhile presidential advisor, is scheduled to speak on Friday at the the Hillsborough County Republican Party’s dinner in Tampa Bay, Florida. The event is a fundraiser, although, as the Tampa Bay Times*reports, it won’t be raising much money from attendees.

The dinner originally hoped to raise money by charging $20,000 per seat for ten guests to sit at Bannon’s table. There were further VIP tickets going for $1000 a piece.*General admission for the event was set at $125.

Ticket prices were dramatically cut last week, when you could pay $5,000 for proximity to Bannon, $300 for a VIP seat, and $50 for general admission. The bargain prices were offered, according to a Facebook post, because*“We want to pack the house!!!”
On Monday, an email went out saying the entire event would be free. “The Trump Anniversary Dinner with Steve Bannon this Friday will be COMPLEMENTARY TO ALL,” one of the organizer of the event wrote in a mass email. “We have a donor who will cover our expenses.”
