In other news, it looks like I'm going to be a polling site challenger for my local precinct. We have a very close house race. I've never done it before. I'm guessing it will be immensely boring (or, I hope it will be, that seems preferable) but I'm curious to see if there will be any shenanigans. This county went for Trump by ~+40%

Back in 2004 I got to be an election site monitor for the Virginia Democratic Party. They needed as many lawyers and law student volunteers as they could get to watch for shenanigans in minority polling locations. (I was a law student at the time). It was a pretty cool experience, I got to meet Tim Kaine (Lieutenant Governor at the time), and I legitimately got to help one voter vote. At the time Virginia’s law was such that you did not have to have ID with you to vote, you could vote by affidavit without it. However one of the voters didn’t have ID and the polling manager wouldn’t let her (voter was an older black woman) vote. She came to me for help (I had a sign). I explained the law to the poll site manager and he backed down and let her, but made a comment along the lines of “If they can’t be bothered to bring their ID with them to vote they shouldn’t be able to vote.”

Yeah, if anything comes up I suspect it would be similar to what you describe, except probably with Hispanic folks. The state party put together pretty good training materials covering the actual processes and laws, but I still need to ask a few questions on a couple points. It seems like 90% of the instructions are "if X happens, call the war room and report it", and I'm not exactly sure yet how much I'm supposed to argue before doing that.

Yeah, I think I was supposed to report things in as well. I can’t remember how exactly it came to be that I ended up speaking to the polling manager, I think it may have been that he saw the woman talking to me and got nervous, so he approached me and then backed down when I explained it to him. Basically I’m pretty sure that he knew he was supposed to let this woman vote and when he saw her talking to me he knew he needed to back down or risk getting himself into trouble. In any event, it was fun, especially as a 2L law student. Are you an attorney?

Happy Halloween!

Our porch light is on, but having no decorations seems to be killing the ToT action and we have a lot of candy. Some teenager is really going to score when I just leave a big bowl of candy on the porch later.

We could make a Creepy Doxxy-ish Personality Thread for you since that seems to be the nature of your posting if you wanna fire off shots.

i mean it really is so selfish and pathetic. nobody is gonna pat you on the back once it's all reduced to rubble bro
I know you say you can change your mind when you are wrong, and you even pride yourself on it. So either you are not as good at it as you like to think, you are trolling, or you think I’m a liar. I guess you may have missed it is another option. Here it is again, the motive is not to be right, insert expletive, it is to wake people the **** up who are still thinking, golly, it just can’t happen here cuz America is too damn special! I don’t have to have the solution in hand because I identify a problem, and I don’t claim to, but when the other side is laser focused, funded, and driven I’m not sorry I’m not going to pretend we can beat them by yelling at Trump tweets itt and waiting for the blue wave. It’s not rolling over and dying. Pretending you are going to stop it by swearing you will disrupt Mitch McConnell’s dessert if you ever see him in real life, and other than that no ideas except more drumming up the vote within the rigged system and stiff upper lip until the tanks roll down the streets kinda is tho. I don’t want you to feel bad, but at what point is it okay with you to say this **** is off the ****ing rails for real and we should think in those terms? Tell me that. Cuz it’s pretty clear even the most upset people here are not going to do **** and you telling me to keep quiet cuz it harshest your mellow makes me think it’s flight or flight as options.

I was explaining the Georgia gubernatorial election to my 9-year old today. One thing I specifically talked about was how if Kemp is governor, he said he would sign a "religious freedom" bill if one came across his desk.

I explained how it was anti-LGBTQ measure and how many people who claim religious reasons for disliking gay people are really just hiding behind the Bible because they think two gay people kissing is "icky." (I kept things simple, ldo)

His reponse: "What are they, four-years old?"

I live in a suburban neighborhood with lots of kids and for some reason, we barely had any trick-or-treaters tonight. I bought four bags of candy and have a huge bowl leftover. My kids will be adding to their haul unless I eat it all first.

npr had a pretty great report on leopards eating faces today.

green card holder iraqi christian had been here like his whole life and ran a bunch of auto repair shops in detroit. also hudge trump supporter bc he loves teh christians and hates the muslims. anyway, he gets an intruder in one of his shops late one night and scares the guy away with his gun. cops come and nail the shop owner for unregistered gun. he gets a year in jail and upon release ICE picks him up and hes been in ICE detention for the last few months.

pretty great that yuge trump and republican supporter gets burned for having a gun. anyway, he will get deported and obv either murdered or imprisoned and then murdered right away in iraq so its kinda sad.
