The heros of Day #1 were (1) our Jewish community, (2) Americas Finest SDPD, and (3) us 99ers. At around 4pm we started our not so little parade. Everyone was in the mood to take to the streets and -- just have positive fun. I really can't stress enough how much fun this is! As I predicted, the SDPD facilitated this exercise of our rights to assemble and speak, blocking off traffic and the trolley for our convenience and safety.
The parade had all sorts of people, and what was surprising was the age spread, from children to 100 year oldies. The median age was much older than I would have imagined. Our placeholder message is "to achieve economic and social justice". But the number one chant was "We got sold out, Banks got bailed out!" -- except when we passes a bank, when it changed to "Shame <inert name> Bank!" Surprisingly, the number one leafleters were Puallites, and fellow travelers of the wingnut brigade, whose message is "Shut down the Fed"! I gotta kick outta asking them if they were in favor of a Seattle-1999 style NV barricade around the "THE FED" to actually physically shut them down... and watching their heads x-pload. Bottom line -- people really hate the banking industry.
Our parade went up to the Civic Center for a short rally and to collect all those who had assembled there. We left the Civic Center a little after 5PM, which to me was the most important thing. AFAIK our fellow 99ers who are celebrating Yom Kippur were not disturbed. BTW, our Jewish community stands in solidarity with our occupation, and has generously offered to print signs for us. My favorite chant here "End the wars by Occupation!"
We then paraded back to Children's Park, which was quickly filled with campers and tents. There was a second ad-hoc parade (not part of OSD) for us red and black flag folks, which once again the SDPD facilitated by blocking traffic for us. By the time we got back, some solidarity pizzas were being served. The mood on the streets here is joyful.
Today, we get to have another parade, as we move our camp from Children's Park to the Civic Center. Start time is at 4pm from the park (Front & Island, Convention Center trolley stop) to the Civic Center (2nd & C, Civic Center trolley stop). GA is at 7pm. Please, come down and join us, I promise you it will be fun!
