Nate's hair probably needs its own twitter account. He's tried various things, but nothing seems to work. However, there was a solid 538 commercial on George Stephanopoulos show today.

In theory that's possible, but it varies by state and there are a lot of regulations. (The answer is also no for you personally, as you're not a resident).

The real Nate Dogg is six feet under.

I reckon he'd look better if he just went a crew cut.

Cali Bros,

You got an opinion on Tuck vs. Thurmond? The papers seem to lean Tuck, but his embrace of charter schools makes me nervous. While I'm not totally opposed to charter schools, schools that can pad their stats by selecting students and sending the troubled and special needs back to the public schools is unjust. Meanwhile, Thurmond seems too favorable to teachers' unions, and the recent attack ad in which they mention that he got sued by the ACLU for underserving poor students is compelling as long as it is reasonably true. I can't really verify it.

I'd probably vote Thurmond regardless, but my sister in law (public school teacher) and mother in law (retired public school teacher) and my wife would probably kill me if I voted for the charter school guy.

Apropos of nothing, here's a takedown of postmodernism by Chomsky which I enjoyed reading. Here is the closing paragraph:

Quote:
A final point, something I've written about elsewhere (e.g., in a discussion in Z papers, and the last chapter of Year 501). There has been a striking change in the behavior of the intellectual class in recent years. The left intellectuals who 60 years ago would have been teaching in working class schools, writing books like "mathematics for the millions" (which made mathematics intelligible to millions of people), participating in and speaking for popular organizations, etc., are now largely disengaged from such activities, and although quick to tell us that they are far more radical than thou, are not to be found, it seems, when there is such an obvious and growing need and even explicit request for the work they could do out there in the world of people with live problems and concerns. That's not a small problem. This country, right now, is in a very strange and ominous state. People are frightened, angry, disillusioned, skeptical, confused. That's an organizer's dream, as I once heard Mike [Michael Albert] say. It's also fertile ground for demagogues and fanatics, who can (and in fact already do) rally substantial popular support with messages that are not unfamiliar from their predecessors in somewhat similar circumstances. We know where it has led in the past; it could again. There's a huge gap that once was at least partially filled by left intellectuals willing to engage with the general public and their problems. It has ominous implications, in my opinion.

Thurmond seems like the easy choice. Isn't Tuck a Devos cuck?

I went to grad school for philosophy. No one took postmodernism seriously. It was associated with English and maybe some anthopology/sociology departments (but both those fields have fairly broad areas of focus.) I did take some upper division sociology theory courses where we read Foucault and some other stuff, but it wasn't handled that well.

Excellent book on postmodernism/psychoanalysis is Grunbaum's trenchent Philosophical Foundations of Psychoanalysis, where a philosopher of science offers a borad and deep critique.

There's literally no way this Kemp joker is ever going to be held accountable, no matter what outcome, right?

Definitely not, but a high priority (possibly 2nd highest after health care) when the Democrats get power again has to be to pass strong legislation to prevent this bull**** from happening again.

I try not to get personally invested in individual politicians, but I really hope Stacey Abrams pulls off the win in Georgia. Seems to have the right mix of compassion, political skill, and policy knowledge to really make her state a better place.

None of the candidates he endorsed—first Jeb Bush, then Marco Rubio, and finally John Kasich—could figure out how to defeat Donald Trump. When the “Access Hollywood” tape was released, Costello said that Trump’s comments were “atrocious, disrespectful towards women,” and “incredibly inappropriate for someone who wants to lead our country.” In November, he cast a reluctant vote for him anyway.

20 year-old rugby player ate a slug in 2010 on a dare from his friends, got a parasite that infested his brain, just died

Quote:
In an unusual and tragic turn, the parasite infested Ballard’s brain — putting him into a coma for more than a year and leaving him paralyzed, according to News.com.au. Ultimately, it killed him.
Quote:
Ballard started experiencing severe pain in his legs within days after eating the slug, according to the Sunday Project.

He asked his mother whether it could have been caused by the critter.

“No, no one gets sick from that,” he mother said she told him, recalling the incident in an interview earlier this year.

Conservatives fall in line, Liberals fall in love.

Remember, a Conservative is someone who hasn’t been screwed over enough yet to change their mind. Note how Conservatives change their mind on gay marriage/homosexuality when they find out one of their children is gay. Until they feel pain, “I got mine, **** you”. Tool bags like this guy won’t change his mind until his wife is denied health coverage then she dies of cancer.

Pain is an amazing teacher.

Most shocking part of this article is that Aussies don't call it a "sluggie".

Don't be silly, slugs would of course be "sluggos". Very important to learn when to use "ie" and when to use "o".
