Matt Taibbi: The Dumb and the Restless

Quote:
Ammon Bundy and his band of weeping, self-pitying, gun-toting, wannabe-terrorist metrosexuals are America's most ridiculous people.

Best bit:

Quote:
Bundy's town hall speech was nothing compared to the instant-satire performance delivered by fellow militiaman Jon Ritzheimer, who videotaped himself in his front car seat weepily telling his daughters why he wouldn't be home for the holidays. The Oscar-winning scene comes when Ritzheimer sighs, drops his carefully shaved head and carefully trimmed goatee downward (the stratospheric Men's Health-level grooming factor is a constant in the #YallQaeda story), then collects himself just long enough to look up at his camera.

"Your Daddy swore an oath!" Ritzheimer bleats, waving a paperback copy of the Constitution in front of the camera. What's hilarious is that you can see Ritzheimer, who just seconds before was ostensibly so overwhelmed with emotion that he "lost it" and had to gather himself, carefully spread his fingers during the scene so that the audience can see the title.

The video was instant viral comedy and inspired some fantastic parodies. "Your Daddy swore an oath!" cried John Darnielle, a.k.a. @mountain_goats on Twitter. "An oath to the naturalist, and later expressionist, playwright, August Strindburg! And, scene!"

I kind of liked this:

Quote:
They gathered around a bonfire (there really was a bonfire) and presumably engaged in Robert Bly-style mythopoetic healing, getting back to their manly roots by stroking their rifles, wearing camo undies, and complaining about all the wrongs done to them by women/the federal government/wild birds/whoever.
Sounds a lot like SMP.

And I mean this is pretty good although already thoroughly mocked elsewhere:

Quote:
Melvin Lee, posted a video on Facebook (these guys are on social media more than most teenagers) where he complained about the popular misconceptions of the movement. "There's nobody in camouflage," said Lee, who was wearing a camouflage jacket. "Well, except for my jacket."

It didn't really bother me. I just had a minor quibble that I think it Mormonism is slightly dumber because we have a much clearer picture about how it was started, i.e. By a known con man. With older religions it's marginally easier to buy into since the origins are essentially myth.

Fire terribly like a Stormtrooper from Star Wars and make sure you don't hit anyone? Slink off into the nearby woods or something?
as i understand it, and i may be wrong, it depends. are you a "cop" (local yokel all the way through fbi) or are you "military"?

undercover "cops" generally have to follow criminal justice law, which puts them in a bad spot, because they can't really fire on anyone in this situation. slink off into the woods is their likely best option.

"military undercover operations", otoh, have significantly more leeway, and would essentially allow firing on the bad guys should the necessity arise.

side note: some of the people commenting on that oregon live article are truly delusional.

I felt the same way about the WTO protestors who ****ed up my commute in 99 but got over it. Missile Dog is alright.

There's no doubt that these people are dangerous, but their ridiculousness is a huge part of who they are. Incidentally, this is true of groups like the actual al-Qaeda, too, led as they are by men in beards and Rick-Perry-style "smart glasses" who play at being religious scholars and intellectuals when in fact they are the kind of people who are afraid of cartoons and lie awake at night wondering if it's permissible to play chess with a menstruating woman. Just because a person is dangerous does not mean he's not also absurd.

The Bundy militiamen are an extreme example of a type that's become common in America. Like the Tea Partiers, they seem to not only believe that they're the only people in history who've ever paid taxes, but that they're the only people who were ever sad about it. What they call tyranny on the part of the federal government just means putting up with the same irritating bills and regulations and other crap that we all put up with, only the rest of us don't whine about it in the front seats of our cars while posing in front of tripods.

LOL that's great, Taibbi really has his finger on the American wingnut pulse.

"Hey, look, it's a problem, we have a problem. We have a problem, and it's going to be solved, but we have to understand the problem. We have to know the problem, and before we do anything and before we do anything stupid, we have to know what we're doing. So we do have a real problem. We do have a real problem. There is such a level of hatred that you can't even believe it. There's a hatred, a deep-seated hatred. We have to find out where it's coming from and what can we do about it?"

looks like Trump is working hard on the "figure out what's going on" timeline element of his proposed Muslim ban

Curious to know what Cruz's stance is vis-a-vis figuring out what's going on.

The Y'All Qaeda Civil War

Funny stuff.

Quote:
Yesterday, accusations were flying that Joe “Captain O” Oshaugnessy had abandoned the refuge and used donation money for a drinking binge at a nearby hotel. Joe took to his page to defend himself, calling it a smear campaign because he disagreed with their actions. That prompted the Arizona State Militia to put out a statement saying he'd done the same thing in Arizona.

I love how they are all reliant on a mix of government handouts and charity and this entire thing is an extension of that.

Them releasing a list of stuff they need and its warm clothing, eggs (desperately apparently), tampons and money was hilarious. These ****ing guys can just go to the shop but they are begging on twitter for menthols and red bull because they put zero planning into this. Half of them are probably shocked they didn't get special welfare for this. They expected the atf to supply them with alcohol tobacco and food I think.

If the fbi cut off their begged snacks and stopped them from going to town they would be starved into surrender in a week.

Put up some spike strips that only puncture tires for people trying to come in. Problem solved.

Or maybe a magnet that yanks the truck nuts off a hitch.

Both good.

His next stop, if it's not the afterlife, will almost certainly be in a cell next to serial poisoner Michael Swango, or Richard Reid the shoe bomber, in the supermax in Florence, Colorado. There will be no snack shortage there, although he'll be getting them through a slit in a door.
i would happily to answer "yes" on my 1040 to the checkoff question "do you want $3 of your federal tax to go to the keep these clowns in supermax fund?"
01-10-2016 , 06:42 PM
I want to go out there in the middle of the night, throw some smoke bombs, blast "Ride of the Valkyries" on a boom box, light strings of firecrackers, then sit back with some popcorn and watch them **** themselves when they think the feds are attacking.

3) arm them all to the teeth. ensure a constant supply.
4) tell them whatever "militia" wins gets the land and let them kill each other off
5) sell this in real time on ppv
6) to whatever few remain, just tell them "ha, we were ****ing with you. you don't get the land. you are going to federal pound me in the ass prison."
6) problem solved. profit.

Why are these people allowed to leave the building without getting arrested?
01-10-2016 , 09:53 PM
I'd be shocked to see Ammon Bundy in supermax. Where is Taibbi getting that idea?

I'm surprised no one has taken a drone out there and flown it around those guys. I imagine this will happen with the next two weeks.
