This is clearly flywf's fault. If he wasn't so dead set on making false accusations of racism all the time then we could have a real discussion about the merits of chattel slavery.

I was alerted to this story this evening in the NYT on rancher Cliven Bundy which featured a quote I was told was racist, and therefor I should apologize for ever criticizing the Bureau of Land Management's handling of this and other situations
I mean I don't even know what to say to that. "A quote I was told was racist".
It wasn't racist. He just isn't media trained.

Secondly, I hope no one is surprised that an old man rancher isn’t media trained to express himself perfectly.

LOL media trained, he just forgot he wasn't wearing his hood.

I genuinely loled at this. ****ing gold, that huge civil war thread was missing a variation on this joke in the title to make it perfect.

Yes it's from the highly partisan website ThinkProgress but the article makes few judgement statements and doesn't even seem to "take a side" on the issue, even if you know where the author stands.

What I would like explained is exactly what part of the Constitution is being defended here, or by militias in general (other than protecting the right to own a gun). During the rhetoric-fest of the 2012 election, I noted that the Constitution has become America's new religious document (a comparison that is also made in the article). People love to selectively cite it and hide behind it, even if they don't fully-of so much as partially-understand it. Also LOL at this quote:

"Bundy’s supporters are also adamant that they love America — they just don’t agree with (or in many cases, even recognize as legitimate) its government or the laws it passes."

Do they even realize that the Founding Fathers were establishing a country by forming a government? The comments also are quick to point out how George Washington, who was apparently representing at the revolt, was quick to send in troops to quell the Whiskey Rebellion, which was due to people refusing to pay taxes on the whiskey they produced. The reality is that the America that exists in these guy's heads never existed .
the gigantic irony of this type of constitutional fellatio is that those who seek to wrap themselves in the constitution are ignorant of the history that produced that document.

you mention the whiskey rebellion, but looking before the constitution is more helpful. the articles of confederation, which reserved more authority to the states while providing for an impotent central government, failed. the constitution fixed this distribution.

the document that they cite to argue for a smaller federal government came about because such an arrangement already failed.

About the best Conservative take you'll get on this.

The thing is there are legitimate land and water issues in the West, but the over hyping and veneration of Wild West antics doesn't solve anything.

As I understood it, one of the points of politics unchained was to allow serious discussions that were too sensitive for the main forum.

Absolutely. There is a really good argument to be made that the BLM should still be releasing land to people who want to improve or put it to productive use. That was their original mission - which changed in the late 1800s when they realized the West wasn't really suited to small farmsteads and resource depletion/monopolization was going to be a huge issue.

If this guy was at all eloquent and didn't have a bunch of militia buddies pointing guns all over the place he might actually spur a debate on this topic.

rjoe you're making a celebrity cameo on chiefsplanet:

Fist you plant some plastic in the Iowa dirt, then just wait for it to grow into a nice big debit card like this one

This basically was an expert play by the government by backing down, then letting these idiots shoot themselves in the foot. Make them martyrs, they get support. Let them reveal themselves, and the legitimate arguments that they actually might have get destroyed just by association. Get a lot of attention on the issue, let them get cocky, then implode.

It also helps that the dude is a racist kook who apparently doesn't know **** about homesteading law and just wants free cattle grazing.
04-24-2014 , 05:15 PM
I gotta wonder if there is any "ignorant wisdom" at play here. Along the lines of let's say some racist stuff and hope to provoke Obama to finally dole out the martyr death by superior firepower that's being asked for.

It's probably just dumb beyond reason, I know. These are folks that allowed the guy ready to frame a massacre with their own families in front of a camera.

"Hey, people are catching on to the rampant tyranny and oppression we are engaging in here at BLM, a department that 95% of Americans probably are unaware exists and 99% of whom could not tell you what B,L and M stand for. We have to do something to divert peoples' attention away from our organization that they don't know exists!"

"I know, I know! You know that crazy idiot who isn't paying grazing fees in Clark County, NV? Let's take him to court for 20 years and obtain a lawful judgment! I bet when we go to enforce it, he will round up dozens of completely insane "militiamen" who might shoot and kill us!"

"YES YES YES! PERFECT!"

Come on now Tommy. It's not our fault that these are your bed fellows. Instead of conspiritarding, maybe re-evaluate a world view in which you start your analysis of every situation with the already assumed conclusion that the big bad government is the problem.

What were we missing....oh yeah Alex Jones fresh hot takes

Quote:
They most certainly were not. "I didn't say nothin' about pickin' cotton," Bundy told Alex Jones on the radio today. "This is bombshell. This is bombshell," said Jones. "You're telling me you did not say 'picking cotton'?"

"No, I did not say pickin' cotton," said Bundy
(article then shows video of him saying pickin cotton)

Also "I have a black friend" bettors cash all tickets

Quote:
Asked by Jones on the radio if he would like the Times to issue a correction, Bundy said, "I would appreciate that. I think they should do that. They make it a racist-type thing. I'm not racist." He went on to say that he knows a black man. "He's been in and out of my home ... I think he feels welcome as anybody else."
04-24-2014 , 05:27 PM
Haha couldn't even call him a friend.
04-24-2014 , 05:30 PM
In hindsight it probably wasn't a good idea to compare Bundy to Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., I guess.

"I think he feels welcome as anyone else"

is definitely not the same as

"He is as welcome as anyone else."

not that it matters at this point
04-24-2014 , 05:35 PM
In and out of his home though. I bet Bundy even let him come through the front door. What more do you people want?

You are misrepresenting my point. Once this blew up into a story, they played it perfectly. Not saying they had some vast conspiracy before that. Doubt that the predicted the militia taking arms once the cattle were seized.

Once that happens, they pretty much did it all perfectly.

Trolly and Suzzer,

The trip to Chiefsplanet was amusing as always. Just out of curiosity, does Live Stream straight up admit that he is a racist, or does he have some convoluted explanation for why he is not a racist?

It is so rare to encounter the former, but it seems like Live Stream might just be a proud Klansman.
04-24-2014 , 05:40 PM
You still asserted that this guy had some legitimate arguments.
04-24-2014 , 05:42 PM
Hannity has bowed out. All is lost.

Quote:
Bundy's comments "are beyond repugnant to me. They are beyond despicable to me. They are beyond ignorant to me," Hannity said during his radio show.

After playing a clip of Bundy trying to clarify what he meant, Hannity said: "Just turn it off. I don't want to hear it anymore. It's obnoxious, ignorant."

I think he sees himself as a realist just calling it like it is. I think he's an old coot. He's also really into old trains and knows pretty much everything about them, which would be endearing if not for the psychotic hatred of minorities and gays.

This is so much fun. It's like watching a dissection of American idiocy.
