why should anyone else be exempt, then, if they don't choose that profession?? Income is income. Trying to make distinctions between "income you made doing your job" and "income you made doing something that isn't your 'real' job but you were just moonlighting" is ******ed.

I mean, again, you talk about not ignoring questions, why shouldn't I be able to make money on the side mowing yards or fixing people's computers or whatever and not pay tax on that? What's special about gambling?

What if somebody gives me 20 grand to get sterilized? Is that funds from labor or recreation (FWIW I love local anesthesia)? Does the answer change if I am paid in red Bordeaux?

That's a job, moonlighting or not. Gambling is not a job for everyone except professional gamblers.

Tell me your opinion on the matter. I'm assuming you don't think gambling should be taxed at all, professional or otherwise. So, you think it's fair that a professional poker player doesn't pay taxes but still partakes in all the things that taxes pay for?

I was going to say earlier that our country must be headed down the tubes when Americans think labor should be taxed but not "recreation". What kind of attitude is that? Now you are suggesting that people get surgery for fun? No wonder our health care costs are soaring through the roof. Surgeons paying a 50% marginal rate while the "patients" get a fat check to take to the blackjack tables.

Really? I think you knew I meant that that money shouldn't be taxed, not that it's literally "recreation" and "fun".

I mean, at least put together a reasonable fight. You guys are just making it too easy on me today.

I already gave you my opinion on this matter, I don't think ANYTHING should be taxed, but that's not really relevant AT ALL, the point is if you're GOING to have income tax, treating gambling income as somehow special and different than all other forms of income is arbitrary and stupid.

Re: Nationalism: Do You Actually Think America is Better Than Other Countries?

I have a lot of fun doing what I do on most days. I get to travel and meet interesting people and solve interesting problems. In fact I think my "job" (I hate to call it that because you'll want to tax my monies) is more fun than the "vacation" I took last week visiting my inlaws. Should I be exempt from paying taxes since I'm having fun?

Also, I am in a sense "gambling" because if the people I "work" with decide to buy something else I don't get paid.

Goodie, your train of thought leads to anything I actually enjoy doing shouldn't be taxed because it's recreation.

I derive a lot of pleasure from building excel models and trading. Please don't tax me.

I derive pleasure from butchering innocent animals and turning them into meat. Please don't tax me.

I love ordering people around with my badge and beating them up with my baton. Please don't tax me.

Are you f'ing serious? You REALLY don't know the difference? REALLY? Here it is:

There is no garaunteed income and you are risking money that almost always was already taxed from your actual job.

If you don't think that's enough of a difference then fair enough but please don't say there is no difference because you're absolutely wrong about that.

Nope, not at all. I don't know where you got the "I enjoy it so I can't be taxed". I never said that. Never thought it either.

Huh. I know this may not be the place but I'm curious. How do you propose society to work without taxes? I'm seriously curious.

You've used "fun" as something that CLEARLY (iyo) makes something "not you're (sic) job," that's pretty much (and by pretty much I mean EXACTLY) the same thing.

So when I teach piano lessons on the side, I have no guaranteed income (maybe everyone thinks I suck as a teacher) and I have to invest money in lesson books and a piano.

So, not taxed, right?

When you perform the job, you do have guaranteed income, someone is going to pay you for that job.

I mean, do we seriously have to have a discussing about this? You see a difference. I mean, you have to.

So, what is the problem with 6 million and 1 if someone is interested in your opinion?

It could actually make the discussion not so cruddy.
