welp, they're gonna start arming schoolteachers in FL now

https://thehill.com/homenews/state-w...pproves-report

Quote:
A state commission in Parkland, Fla., investigating the February mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School unanimously approved a report on Wednesday that calls for some teachers to be armed.

The 458-page report, produced by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission, makes dozens of recommendations, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and will now be sent to outgoing Gov. Rick Scott (R), incoming Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and state legislative leaders.

In addition to recommending that some teachers carry guns, the report also calls for state laws to be revised to allow school districts to increase taxes for school security improvements and established safety precautions in classrooms.

There were two people shot 300 metres from my home in broad daylight today. I'm in Canada and in a really nice neighbourhood, wtf?

In which the right can go **** themselves with their "guns don't shoot people, people shoot people" lines:

Former LSU football player loses his leg after a dog shoots him on hunting trip

Quote:
“All of us have hunted for 20 years or more and none of us thought about that happening,” Micah Heckford said to the Clarion Ledger recently about the incident, which occurred in late December and resulted in the amputation of Branch’s left leg. The Louisiana native, who played at LSU from 2009 to 2011, was reported to be in intensive care at University of Mississippi Medical Center and is expected to recover.

“The opportunities for an accident are there and we just don’t realize it,” Heckford added. “We think we’re being safe, but are we? If there’s a shell in that gun, anything can happen.”

Branch was struck by a shotgun blast when a dog who was with his group jumped into the back of their Ford Ranger and stepped on the weapon’s safety, setting it to fire mode, while also managing to pull the trigger. Heckford said he and Branch’s cousin, David Joe Branch, immediately put Branch in the vehicle and called 911 while they drove to the nearest access point for an ambulance.

I think our well trained militia needs some remedial training...

We need to start training good dogs with guns to stop the bad ones.

How many Police Officers are shot in the US on an annual basis? Just wondered as I was reading an article about a police officer who was murdered in the country I live in 25 years ago and apparently he was the last one to be killed.
01-20-2019 , 08:23 AM
This was found through googling "how many police officers are shot yearly", seems reliable (129 in 2017);
http://nleomf.org/facts-figures/officer-deaths-by-year

There is more on that google search page. Take note that the above number seems to be deaths and not so much shootings so I'd assume this included traffic related deaths.

This is what wikipedia says for 2018;
2018[edit]
The Officer Down Memorial Page reports 149 deaths in the line of duty.[22] The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund counted 144 federal, state, local, tribal and territorial officers killed. Firearms-related fatalities were the leading cause of officer deaths for the year.[23]

You can check out the sources but they claim 52 shot and killed and 50 in traffic related incidents.
01-20-2019 , 11:22 AM
This stat might also include incidents like heart attacks as long as they occur while on duty. I remember a discussion about law enforcements deaths and the stat that was cited back then included any death no matter the cause.
01-20-2019 , 01:09 PM
Yeah, thats why I broke it down in the two leading causes of death being firearms related deaths on 1 and traffic related death on 2. Together they are 102 so that leaves about 42 deaths which were caused by *other* (one number said 149 but the report itself says 144).

I've looked at the source and other is broken down into;
18 job related illness including cardiac arrest
15 because of 9/11 event related illness
4 drowned
3 beaten to death

Phenomenal argument I saw on ChiefsPlanet a month or two ago - when an illegal immigrant in CA went on a shooting spree and obviously made national news, someone there seriously tried to argue the media was trying to cover it up because he was illegal. Dude had no clue whatsoever about all the mass shootings like this you don't hear about because there's no angle to them, just a boring white dude killing a few people.

Don’t have the link but apparently he made 5 women lay down and killed each of them; he had no intention of robbing the bank.
