Four young children were discovered dead at a west Orlando apartment complex late Monday, nearly 24 hours after a standoff that began when an Orlando police officer was shot responding to a domestic violence call.
The gunman was also found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a closet when SWAT officers entered the apartment at about 9 p.m., Orlando Police Chief John Mina said at a news conference just before midnight.
“A short time ago we made entry into the apartment and found that all four children have been killed by the suspect by apparent gunshot wounds,” Mina said.
“Our hearts go out to the families involved.”
The children were ages 1, 6, 10 and 11. “We have no idea when those children lost their lives,” Mina said.
Police earlier Monday had identified the suspected gunman as 35-year-old Gary Wayne Lindsey Jr., a felon who was on probation for arson and other charges.
The standoff began after officers responded about 11:45 p.m. Sunday to a woman who reported being battered by Lindsey at the Westbrook Apartments, police said. The woman had fled the second-story apartment to a nearby restaurant on Kirkman Road to call police. Officers tried to arrest Lindsey at the apartment when a shootout began.
Orlando Police officer Kevin Valencia was shot and suffered a “significant” injury, Mina said. Valencia is recovering after surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center and was expected to live. He was still in critical condition early Tuesday, Mina said. He asked for prayers for Valencia, who is in his 20s.
Two of the children found dead are believed to be Lindsey’s, while the others are believed to belong to the domestic violence victim.
Yeah, what's up with that? Comet Pizza was important enough for idiots to investigate, but not the ICE detention facilities? I know, that's the joke, but...wtf? Is being consistent really that hard? I know, that's the joke too.
When the Bigelows arrived at the dentist’s office, the other driver pulled into the parking lot nearby. He confronted Meghan Bigelow and opened fire with a Glock 19, critically injuring her and killing her son Vaughn. Another son, Asa, 8, was critically injured. The gunfire also hit a bystander, who was wounded in both of his arms, while another Bigelow child, 12-year-old Cooper, ran to safety.
Sure is great that we live in a country where this guy can just carry a gun around for no reason
Police say a customer sat down on a couch in the store to test it when his gun fell out of his pants. He didn't realize the firearm had dropped onto the couch and continued to shop. Unfortunately, the first people to see the gun didn't understand its firepower.
Kids found the gun on the couch cushion and pulled the trigger, firing a single shot. No injuries were reported from the incident.
Milo Yiannopoulos has started issuing reporters threatening messages when asked to comment for stories.
“I can’t wait for the vigilante squads to start gunning journalists down on sight,” the right-wing nationalist told Observer over text message, in response to a longer feature in development about an Upper East Side restaurant he is said to frequent.
It turns out that one of the editors killed, Rob Hiaasen, was a friend of a friend. I never met him, but reading this story about him, I can see he would have been popular with his colleagues. I occasionally hung around my friend's newspaper buddies in college. They drank a lot and told good stories. They loved their jobs and each other. I envied them. Many of them are still close, decades later. Despite today, the Capital Gazette is putting out a paper tomorrow. I can totally see that.
