That's also true. The Empire is kind of a mashup of various colonial/imperial powers.

Also the stormtroopers are called stormtroopers.

Why did we call it "The Death Star"? Couldn't we have called it "The Justice Star" or "The Defense of Freedom Star"?

Are we the baddies?

In real space news, SpaceX just successfully flew their new crew vehicle to the ISS. It is currently the only commercial and only American vehicle capable of flying crew to orbit that is currently operational. First flight with crew onboard is supposed to be later this year.

There are other similarities, too. Faking an attack to gain emergency dictatorial powers. Empire is the literal translation of Reich while the Rebels are called the Alliance. Just like Hitler, Palpatine's title is (supreme) chancellor.

Some bad fires in South Eastern Australia right now. Reminiscent of the extremely destructive Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. I mean, this is what you get when you have the hottest summer on record followed by the hottest start to autumn on record, I guess.

Who are the rebels? The French Resistance?

Lucas had an evil empire and in 1977 the first level model was obvious and came with good costume design.

If there was any political thought behind these children's movies it wasn't just Nazis are bad.

It's a dystopic future for America where rebels have to reestablish the Republic. Bernie is Yoda. AOC is Luke. In this weird version Trump as Jabba the Hut becomes Emperor.

I don’t like...well much of anything really, but I am not an action movie fan, not a super hero fan, not a fan of movies in the theater in general etc.

I took the kids to see Spider-Man into the spiderverse yesterday and it was really good. The first half particularly was exceptional. Good writing and pretty funny, the animation was interesting and fun. Music was good. I highly recommend it, which back to my preamble, is rare for me cuz bah humbug.

It has to be more than that. The Rebel Alliance consists of many different species, controls some territory and has access to heavy military gear. It can be an amalgam of the different resistance movements (French, Polish, Dutch, Norwegian, Ukrainian etc.) and the Allied nations.

Not everything has to fit 1:1 to recognize the parallels. GRR Martin obviously fashioned the Dothraki in Game of Thrones after the Mongols and the Ironborn after the Vikings. I doubt Lucas or Martin put deep political thought behind any of that.

Far be it from me to rain on Taco Bell’s parade but if this guy ate nothing, wouldn’t he had likely survived the same? Almost no calories in taco sauce packets.

On an episode of The Big Bang Theory, the guys are planning a Star Wars binge and are arguing about the order in which they should watch the movies.

Sheldon: "I want to be disappointed in the order that George Lucas intended."

99% of stormtroopers spend 99% of their career harassing unarmed nobodies whose idea of a weapon is whatever they use to adjust equipment in a moisture farm.

Rebels is a good canonical demonstration of what most troopers do. They are more a militarised police force than a true dedicated army, keeping local civilians in line and pitting down small scale uprisings. The troopers protecting the shield facility on the forest moon of endor keeping stone age teddy bears in line is pretty much a normal posting.

Non or less canonical sources also discuss how most blasters have a lot less power than what you see a rebel or outlaw using, with high power blasters banned in the central planets of the empire, and trooper armour would stop those shots.

So basically what we see in the original trilogy is very much the exception of what happened across the quadrant the empire controlled.

Force Awakens also touches on the idea that it is all about stripping identity from troopers as well, so is a psychological control of the troopers themselves.

The better question is we are introduced to troopers with the idea they can be recognised by how accurate their shooting is. And yet they proceed to fail to hit anyone at any point.

Unrelated: seems like Fox News isn't the only part of Fox that has difficulty with the truth!

Arbitrator rules against Fox for $179 million in suit filed by the stars + producer of Bones

The details are kind of long and technical, but as best as I can figure out:
- David Boreanaz, Emily Deschanel, and producer Barry Josephson were entitled to profit sharing for money made by the show
- Fox did a bunch of trickery to license out the show, for free, to other divisions of the company that could make revenue from it (like, putting it on Hulu) without having to include that revenue in profit sharing
- they did a bunch of shenanigans to cover up and lie about this behavior, in what the arbitrator called a company-wide culture:

Quote:
In coming to a decision, Lichtman describes how some of Fox’s top executives, including 21st Century Fox president Peter Rice and Fox TV CEO Dana Walden (soon to be top executives at Disney) plus Fox TV chairman Gary Newman (leaving Fox) “appear to have given false testimony in an attempt to conceal their wrongful acts.” According to the ruling, Fox has taken a “cavalier attitude toward its wrongdoing" and exhibits a "company-wide culture and an accepted climate that enveloped an aversion for the truth."

I went with my daughter who wants to go into animation. I can not describe how much she loved this movie. And yeah, it was pretty good. I wouldn't have gone if I weren't going with a kid and wouldn't really recommend it to adults unless they are really into animation, but I was definitely happy to go with her.

As a rule, the animated "kids" movies are much better than the live action superhero movies. I think part of that is that they know a lot more of the audience will be parents.

I've wondered why athletes + entertainers etc don't boycott fox and all it's various relatives. I know paychecks etc, but it's weird there's a whole conglomerate that everyone treats as normal, except for this one crazy tentacle.

Alcoholocaust was the name of one of Jim Jeffries's early stand-up special. He was hilarious before becoming a dad. Still funny now too.
