It is a bit ****ed up that the US is giving weapons to SA to supposedly use on Muslim terrorists in Yemen when they're really just bombing the hell out of the country without regard to civilians.

It's totally ****ed up. If Schiff and Feinstein and the like are all into how we have to double down on committing genocide in Yemen because that's exactly what the Russians don't want us to do, then super **** them and the horses they rode in on.

So Russia poisons a former russian general who was living in the UK and his daughter. British response is to not have any british referees at the russia world cup, maybe.

That'll show em.

You have to remember that Boris Johnson is a clown. Not that I expect the British reaction to be worth much several years from now when the enquiries are finished, but still, the guy's a buffoon and very unlikely to ever say something worth taking seriously.

This is a 45-minute "teardown" of the "overpriced" Jucero. It's pretty funny, as it turns out it was very well engineered and made. The commentator says it was a steal at $400 and probably cost around $1000 to manufacture. It's quite entertaining. (was linked in comment to tweet above)

Here in modern 21st-century NH, we are again considering raising the marriage age above 13. Going for 16 this time since 18 was a bit too ambitious. Passed the house and headed for the senate, and GOP gov says he'd sign.

Apparently, Oklahoma teachers have plans in place to strike and have plenty of support from districts, superintendents, etc. It seems they don't even make a living wage.

Teachers have it very bad in any state that has weak public employee unions. I had a live in girlfriend who was a public school teacher in FL. She was assigned to an alternative school for students who had been expelled from the regular schools. She made about $23K per year and her health insurance cost about 30-40% of her gross.

Maybe. I saw the 5% raise earlier but nothing to address to the rising healthcare program rates which would could obliterate the pay raise by simply transfering the costs from teacher's income to their premiums. In any case, a hearty lol at the government saying they're going to have to cut elsewhere to make the pay raises

Quote:
Unlike a previous 5 percent pay raise that was backed by Mr. Justice and the State House of Representatives, the deal reached on Tuesday had the support of Mitch Carmichael, the president of the more conservative State Senate. Mr. Carmichael said it would probably lead to painful cuts in other parts of the state budget; another Republican senator, Craig Blair, said in a conference committee that Medicaid would be among the areas cut.

“These things come at a cost,” Mr. Carmichael said.

They've been giving tax cuts to corporations since forever but suddenly they've discovered that there's only so much they can do to give pay raises to teachers? Get out of here

France is getting ready to raise their legal age of consent from 11 to 15

The following, based on conversations with multiple sources familiar with the matter, illuminates the extraordinary breakdown of trust between committee investigators and the witnesses they call. It also suggests that some people working on the committee investigation may be trying to covertly assist one of the president’s closest allies—when the president’s inner circle is ostensibly a focus of their probe.

A few days after Kramer’s testimony, his lawyer, Larry Robbins, got a strange call. The call was from Stephen Ryan, a lawyer who represents Trump’s longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen. Cohen is facing scrutiny from Special Counsel Robert Mueller and congressional investigators regarding potential coordination between Trump’s team and the Kremlin. He featured prominently in the Steele dossier—the document that Kramer handled—and is currently suing Buzzfeed for publishing it.

Ryan told Robbins he reached out because someone from the House told him that Robbins’ client, Kramer, had information about the Steele dossier that could help Cohen.

Robbins declined to help. Ryan then asked Robbins not to tell the House intelligence committee about their conversation.

...

So what does the study tell us about the ride-hailing business model? “It tells us that it’s a ****ty place to work,” says Mark Tluszcz, co-founder and CEO of Mangrove Capital Partners who has described the gig economy model as the modern day sweatshop, and says his VC firm made a conscious decision not to invest in gig economy companies because the model is exploitative.
This wildly implausible result has been retracted.

Wait until SCOTUS gets through with public employee unions

Zoepf said he would be updating the CEEPR paper, but in the meantime he recalculated the figures using a methodology suggested by Hall, and found that the median profit was $8.55 per hour, rather than $3.37, and only 8% of drivers lose money on on-demand platforms.

Using another methodology, he added, the median rises to $10 per hour and only 4% of drivers lose money.
