Check out Boysetsfire! They've been around for like 20 years. And I think they must have randomly gotten popular in Germany because they play tons of shows there (they're American).

Re: The LC Music Thread of Politics

Here's an explicitly anti-Trump song by a young band, none of whose members are affiliated with Rage Against the Machine. I assume many younger bands and performers, particularly rappers, have songs like this, either directly against Trump or that allude to him.

https://youtu.be/13hhqEpxMwI?t=52

Quote:
You've been in school for ten years now
Eighty grand indebted down
Every day's a missile test
Your dancing shoes and torn up dress

2017 we know
Reality's one big sick show
Every day's a crisis fest
Your dancing shoes and torn up dress
...
There's a coup in our country
It's happening now
A coup in our city
It's happening downtown, every tragedy has its sad clown
Victory has its dark cloud
It's sad that in the 80s you mainly had to look to punk or bands like REM (or holdovers from the 60s) for explicitly political stuff. Many of those aging bands tweet or do things like benefit shows consistent with their politics, or actually sue politicians that use their work without permission (unlike the Rolling Stones).

Re: The LC Music Thread of Politics

Heavy metal has a long history of having an anti-establishment, anti-war message. Pretty much every band has explicit counter-cultural themes --Black Sabbath I think started this tradition with Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, and many others carrying on the trend. Most any metal band you name will have quasi-political songs.

Re: The LC Music Thread of Politics

Black Sabbath was motivated by the same youth movement and Vietnam angst that inspired guy like Bob Dylan, but they were more hardscrabble and angry so their music was metal instead of all the peace and love stuff that the college kids were all about.

Re: The LC Music Thread of Politics

Bob Dylan was angry and there's not a lot of love in his music. (Maybe in his born again Christian albums?) He was a pioneer of hate music. (Like a Rolling Stone, Positively 4th St, etc.)

Re: The LC Music Thread of Politics

can't mention bob dylan in a politics music thread and not post masters of war:

Quote:
And I hope that you die
And your death’ll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I’ll watch while you’re lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I’ll stand o’er your grave
’Til I’m sure that you’re dead
and the slightly less obvious choice, lonesome death of hattie carroll

which is about a black waitress who died after being beaten with a cane at a high society gathering by a rich piece of **** white aristocrat

Quote:
In the courtroom of honor, the judge pounded his gavel
To show that all’s equal and that the courts are on the level
And that the strings in the books ain’t pulled and persuaded
And that even the nobles get properly handled
Once that the cops have chased after and caught ’em
And that the ladder of law has no top and no bottom
Stared at the person who killed for no reason
Who just happened to be feelin’ that way without warnin’
And he spoke through his cloak, most deep and distinguished
And handed out strongly, for penalty and repentance
William Zanzinger with a six-month sentence

Oh, but you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears
Bury the rag deep in your face
For now’s the time for your tears
been years since i've really listened to dylan and damn he is GOAT.

The world can’t forget that misery
‘n the young ones now beggin’ the old ones please
t’ stop bein’ madmen
‘fore they have t’ tell their children
’bout the burnin’s back in World War Three’s
War One was balls ‘n powder ‘n blood ‘n snow
War Two rained death ‘n showers ‘n skeletons

The last six songs posted in this thread are at least 40 years old.

May as well post:

Of course in the UK, Sex Pistols were king when it came to anti-establishment music.

Unfortunately...

+1 always so with Crass and the other second wave of punks.

I remember Siouxsie describing that lot as "horrendous".

I know my mum would wholeheartedly agree with at least half of that view.

I've occasionally wondered who stole the double album Stations of Crass from me. For the first time it's occurred to me that it may have been mum.

(edited as link doesn't work. Full album is on youtube)
