That Washington Post article was great. I think part of problem, though, is this mentality:

And this is from someone who is being critical of the cop in question (though a former cop himself).
Why do they have to be "really careful"? At the very least, take the same level of care that is exercised when investigating any other crime. If you've got video evidence that is not even remotely consistent with the statement made by the perp, then he's lying. That's all there is to it.
When people are accused of crimes that they are guilty of, they often lie. It doesn't matter that they're a police officer. If anything, cops are more likely to lie (as they're less likely to face repercussions). No extra care is required for any reason.
