Inconceivable! On the one year anniversary of Freddy Gray's death, police in Baltimore shoot a 13 yr old armed with a toy gun.

The commissioner said that he did not believe the officer who fired acted inappropriately and that he did not know if the boy had threatened the officers or given them reason to believe their lives were in danger.

California deputies charged in beating captured on video

Alameda County (contains Oakland) sheriffs followed a suspect in a car chase from the east bay into SF and beat him with batons (caught on video) when they finally caught him.

Quote:
Two Northern California sheriff's deputies were charged with felonies Tuesday in the beating of a suspected car thief in an incident captured on surveillance video.

San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon announced that Alameda County sheriff's deputies Luis R. Santamaria and Paul D. Wieber were each charged with assault with a deadly weapon, assault under color of authority and battery.

Two residents' surveillance cameras captured deputies continuing to beat the suspect with steel batons as he lay on the ground, crying out in pain. In addition, Gascon said one of the deputies' body-worn cameras appears to have accidentally turned on.

Probably mentally ill person attacks 4 people with a knife . One is killed, three are injured.

A tragedy but it would have been a bigger tragedy if he had access to a gun. Strict gun laws can't prevent all tragedies. They can make sure that the ones that can't be prevented result in less deaths.

That was supposed to be in the cold, dead hands thread.

This is cool. Guy gets a ticket for parking legally, uses the city's open data to determine the city had been ticketing people illegally to the tune of millions, notifies the police, and they update their procedures

The authorities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire are investigating the use of force by police officers shown in a video punching a man with outstanding warrants who had surrendered and dropped to the ground after a car chase.

The video, about one minute long, was recorded by at least one news helicopter that had been following the car chase that started in Holden, Mass., and ended on a dead-end street in Nashua, N.H., about 60 miles away, on Wednesday.

The footage shows the man, identified as Richard Simone, 50, opening the door of his truck and kneeling in front of about half a dozen officers, some of whom aim weapons at him. Then, once he is face down, the officers punch him in the head and body at least eight times.

On Thursday, the New Hampshire authorities announced that a state trooper had been relieved of his duties without pay as a result of the investigation. No further details about his identity or what role he played in connection with the events depicted in the video were immediately available.
Guys gets out lays on the ground and 3 out of the 6 cops do nothing to cuff the guy, just start punching. I guess they're there to get in the state mandated punches and kicks

WaPo doing some more of God's work. It's a long read and goes through a lot of cases but the general theme is the police reports were complete lies that made the police look like heroes, until footage was found to contradict the claims or they tried and hide that there was footage at all.

Eh....cant easily tell from the video but did he like smash his window with the umbrella? Thats what the cop implied. So he tackled him and then brought him to be arrested. Seems not that bad
05-26-2016 , 05:54 PM
He scuffed the window. The report said the scuff came off when they inspected it.
05-26-2016 , 06:25 PM
Ok. Cop doesnt necessarily know that, thinks he got his property damaged by some guy jaywalking. Its an overreaction but its not like he ****s the guy up. He basically just gets to do something that the rest of us might wish we could which is make the guy accountable and embarrass him a little.

Obviously I'm not super gung-ho Team Cop in basically any situation but this one isnt really worth getting riled up about imo. Final verdict: meh
05-26-2016 , 06:29 PM
yeah if there were actual damage the cops wouldn't be redacting the officer's name

Cliffs:
In 2008, Davontae Sanford, a 14 year old with learning disabilities, confessed to a multiple murder. Shortly thereafter, a professional hitman was arrested and confessed to multiple different murders, including the one Sanford confessed to committing. Despite this, and the hitman in question's willingness to testify, prosecutors have thus far held fast to the idea that Sanford committed the murders, or possibly was an accomplice to the professional hitman. (?) Oh, and of course the kid had a terrible attorney who I believe is currently suspended from practicing law due to giving terrible advice to his clients.

Disappearing a couple cop cars to prevent the release of dash cam footage. Impressive.

I'm actually kind of surprised there's any kind of legislative effort to clean this up in south carolina.

Need to make it a LOT easier to get rid of dirty cops, even if not able to jail them. How about:

Dashcams/bodycams to be on at all times. If the event one is turned off or of a "malfunction", officer loses all presumption of innocence IRT losing his job.

Keeps presumption of innocence for criminal liability, of course. But a pattern of missing footage can be introduced as evidence of knowingly covering up a crime.

There was a study released last week showing the ability to turn off a camera increases the abuse by police. If they can turn them off at all then its worse than not having them at all.

I don't really get why they should be able to turn them off in the first place, but ensuring they don't is the only game in town. If kicking them off the force without pension is the solution then it makes sense.

That Washington Post article was great. I think part of problem, though, is this mentality:

Quote:
“I’d be uncomfortable going that far,” Stoughton says. “The video raises real questions about how this raid was conducted and about whether the shooting was justified, but I think we need to be really careful before accusing an officer of lying.
And this is from someone who is being critical of the cop in question (though a former cop himself).

Why do they have to be "really careful"? At the very least, take the same level of care that is exercised when investigating any other crime. If you've got video evidence that is not even remotely consistent with the statement made by the perp, then he's lying. That's all there is to it.

When people are accused of crimes that they are guilty of, they often lie. It doesn't matter that they're a police officer. If anything, cops are more likely to lie (as they're less likely to face repercussions). No extra care is required for any reason.

The off duty cop in a pedestrian case on a previous case:

Quote:
According to court records, Barrett and other officers were arresting Scotty Santos and his brother in 2006 when Barrett said he felt Santos’ hand on his weapon and warned other officers that Santos had his gun, even though he did not. Barrett struck Santos across the nose with his flashlight at least twice and another officer hit Santos on the back of his head with his flashlight.

Barrett testified that he told other officers that Santos had his gun “just as a warning” even though Santos never took the gun and there was no struggle for it, according to court records.
