That cop's name will probably come out and he'd probably have been better off if he murdered an unarmed black teenager. White folks get MAD when you kill dogs.

I have no sympathy for killers.

But we do have a system in place to punish and/or rehabilitate criminals.

Anyone else besides me think Van Houten actually should have been released already...

Jerry Brown is a ****ing idiot no matter what party you support... maybe I feel like she should have been released just because that moron veto'd the parole board (Which i think is kind of an abuse of power I don't see a problem with appeals but if a trained parole board says ok...)

Anyway yeah she murdered someone so you get what you get...but if we are strictly talking about the prison and rehabilitation system... and the board says she is good (40 yr model prisoner) that guy seems more like a Beef Supreme President Camacho rather than the leader of california

PVN if you have 22 minutes to spare and want to see one of the most hilarious traffic stops ever caught on camera I suggest you click the link. It is totally relevant to the thread, a fine showcase of police patience in the face of extreme stupidity.

Have a great day!

A sovereign vessel actually is a thing, but for ships, not cars.

I was appropriating some of terminology used by the driver in question.

It's newsworthy when a couple of cops aren't dicks this one time? I thought I had a relatively low opinion of cops, but you take the cake.

DeSoto Police responded Tuesday to what it called a "very serious" interaction, after an officer drew a weapon on a citizen over the weekend.

...

The video Dominguez*posted to YouTube*on Saturday shows a DeSoto Police SUV turn in the parking lot and Dominguez following on his bike.

The vehicle then brakes and the officer steps out of the vehicle and draws down on Dominguez.

The audio is compromised by wind, but you hear the officer say "Sir if you keep following me (inaudible)"

The 30-something BMX enthusiast can be heard shouting back "I'm just riding my bike".

Costa said Tuesday the officer stated, with his weapon pointed at Dominguez, that if he continued to follow him it would be viewed as a threat.

A Tennessee sheriff is being sued for using excessive force after he was recorded boasting he had told officers to shoot a man rather than risk damaging police cars by ramming him off the road.

“They said ‘we’re ramming him,’” Sheriff Oddie Shoupe of White County said on tape in the aftermath of the killing of suspect Michael Dial. “I said, ‘Don’t ram him, shoot him.’ **** that ****. Ain’t gonna tear up my cars.”

Shoupe arrived on the scene shortly after police had shot Dial at the conclusion of a low-speed chase, clearly upset he had missed the excitement.

Sheriff Oddie Shoupe.

“I love this ****,” Shoupe said, apparently unaware that his comments were being picked up by another deputy’s body-worn camera. “God, I tell you what, I thrive on it.

“If they don’t think I’ll give the damn order to kill that mother****er they’re full of ****,” he added, laughing. “Take him out. I’m here on the damn wrong end of the county,” he said.

California*police investigating a violent white nationalist event worked with white supremacists in an effort to identify counter protesters and sought the prosecution of activists with “anti-racist” beliefs, court documents show.
Quote:
In one phone call with Doug McCormack, identified by police as the TWP affiliate who acquired the permit for the Sacramento rally, CHP investigator Donovan Ayres warned him that police might have to release his name in response to a public records requests. The officer said he would try to protect McCormack.

“I’m gonna suggest that we hold that or redact your name or something until this gets resolved,” Ayres told McCormack, adding that he didn’t know who had requested records of the permit and noting, “If I did, I would tell you.”

Ayres’ reports noted that McCormack was armed at the rally with a knife.

The officer’s write-up about an African American anti-fascist activist included a photo of him at the hospital after the rally and noted that he had been stabbed in the abdomen, chest and hand.

Ayres, however, treated the protester like a suspect in the investigation. The police investigator recommended the man be charged with 11 offenses, including disturbing the peace, conspiracy, assault, unlawful assembly and wearing a mask to evade police.

As evidence, Ayres provided Facebook photos of the man holding up his fist. The officer wrote that the man’s “Black Power salute” and his “support for anti-racist activism” demonstrated his “intent and motivation to violate the civil rights” of the neo-Nazi group. He was ultimately not charged.

Ayres’ report also noted Felarca’s political activism in great detail, referencing her activism on behalf of students of color and women’s rights protests.
Quote:
Officers also worked with TWP member Derik Punneo to try and identify anti-fascist activists, recordings revealed. Officers interviewed Punneo in jail after he was*arrested*for an unrelated domestic violence charge. Audio recordings captured investigators saying they brought photos to show him, hoping he could help them identify anti-fascist activists.

The officers said, “We’re pretty much going after them,” and assured him: “We’re looking at you as a victim.”

Ayres’ report noted that Punneo was armed with a knife at the neo-Nazi rally and that one stabbing victim told officers he believed Punneo was responsible. Using video footage, Ayres also noted that Punneo was “in the vicinity” of another victim at the time he was injured, but the officer said the evidence ultimately wasn’t clear.

The people with an abundance of faith in the system point to the strong institutions we have that keep people like Trump from full fascism, but the police are one of the strongest institutions and what side they are on is clear as hell.

The federalist system mostly ensures that locals can exercise that sort of authority. The public is so scared of crime or indifferent to the brutality that no one, other than the victimized communities, cares enough to want to force it to stop.

Historically I don't think national police forces are better. They are probably worse. I just listened to a podcast on the history of Haiti. One thing that happened was there was a long series of terrible authoritarians leading up to the US occupation (1915-1934). The governments had little reach into the countryside though. During the occupation the strength of the central government and its institutions increased and made possible the later and more thorough tyranny of Papa Doc. I just mention it because I was listening yesterday and its not that widely known. There are better known examples of terrible national police forces.

Ultimately I think the problem is that people are pretty easily frightened and often callous. I'm not feeling like there are any great solutions though. Education and eternal vigilance aren't a lot to pin your hopes on. I think in anti-authoritarian moments people have to actually dismantle/reduce the tools of oppression and not just bask in the glow of some enlightened leadership and the genius laws and administrative processes they invent.

Body camera of Asheville, NC police shows them beating a black man accused of jaywalking

Quote:
Federal authorities are investigating body camera footage from August that shows two white police officers Tasering and beating a black man whom they accused of jaywalking in Asheville, N.C.

The footage, obtained by The Citizen Times, has created an uproar in town. One of the officers has resigned, and the police chief has offered to follow suit.

“The city is in outrage,” Councilwoman Sheneika Smith said in a phone interview on Wednesday. “Facebook was flaming. It was on fire.”
Quote:
“You didn’t use the crosswalk four times in a row,” Officer Ruggiero says in the video.

“All I’m trying to do is go home, man. I’m tired!” Mr. Rush says. “I just got off of work.”

“I’ve got two options, I can either arrest you or write you a ticket,” Officer Ruggiero says.

“It doesn’t matter, man. Do what you got to do besides keep harassing me, man,” Mr. Rush responds.
Thank god we have brave, heroic officers stepping into situations like this to protect the public

(side note: I absolutely love "Facebook was flaming. It was on fire.")

Read any arbitration case, from any unionized position. They almost always side with the employee. (I’m not sure about police cases specifically, but I deal with a lot of arbitrators through work)
