Modern medicine has already reached the point where in some cases it can keep a human alive past the point where there is any quality of life. With further scientific advances this will be more pronounced. A life of dignity must include a dignified death and therefore I think everyone should have the right to choose the time when to call it quits and go out on their own terms.
I am talking about very old and terminally ill people here. This does not apply to people where there is still hope for improvement.

If I start to get alzheimers I want to die. If I get one of those trapped in my own body with perfectly functioning brain but can't speak things I want to die.

Can someone arrange that for me? kthx

Gotta make a living will to sort this all out while you still can

My dad's end of life was fantastically awful and traumatic. It involved huge family fights with him about treatments (mostly between him my mom and one of my brothers) that would be worth it or not. I spent every other night up with him all night for a few months because he needed help like every 15 minutes. After he died I had a dream where he was some kind of zombie pretty much every night for about a year.

My mom's instructions are basically do nothing at all period no matter what if she can't make the decision. And I've got medical power of attorney so I'm expected to enforce that.

A doctor can chime in (Hobbes?), but I expect living wills are disregarded quite a bit unless there's someone in the family pushing for it.

Talking to my mom, "Well at least our side of the family, we're likely to go out painlessly with a heart attack, unlike your side that has cancer"

My mom describing my dad describe his heart attack which he survived, "actually he described it as excruciatingly painful."

Me: "F*ck"

Still in Euroland. At airport, plane leaves in 20 mins. Trip was great. Both the Germans and Belgians were strangely friendly. I did go on about 3 or 4 extended anti-trump rants to the amusement of the locals.

Germans are some of the friendliest people in Europe. I've only spent a few days in Belgium so not sure about that.

Anyway, my point is there is certainly room for it to change in either direction.

Something's off when there's a societal expectation that everyone should have at least a little plastic surgery done on their face.

SCOTUS upheld Ohio's voter registration purge law

sigh

Alito's first paragraph of the opinion

Quote:
It has been estimated that 24 million voter registrations
in the United States—about one in eight—are either
invalid or significantly inaccurate. Pew Center on the
States, Election Initiatives Issue Brief (Feb. 2012). And
about 2.75 million people are said to be registered to vote
in more than one State. Ibid

Man, sounds great. I'd be set upon by the locals for sure if I went off on Trump in public here.

After skimming the opinion, this seems like a case of a defensible SCOTUS decision regarding a really bad (but not to the point of unconstitutional) policy. I think the fault here is the State of Ohio's, rather than some completely unjustifiable opinion.

That doesn't make the outcome any better, obviously.

The whole people not being friendly in certain countries thing is a bit overstated imo. As long as you aren't being an ugly American, you'll find most people to be at minimum neutral towards you if not outwardly hospitable.

Your experience, the amount of time you spend in a place, your preconceived notions, and your mood at the time can affect your perception of the locals. People **** all over the French for being rude but I didn't have that experience. Actually, it was quite the opposite. Tourists will talk about how rude people in China are. But I've been invited into people's homes to celebrate holidays in my time living in China. People say Swedish people are unfriendly. But when I was in Gothenburg during Easter in 2017, a friend of my host invited me and a few others to travel to an island off the coast to spend time at their place where we had soup and shared stories together.

But like nearly everything in life, results may vary.

Tbh, I can't believe that it took this long for fast food chains to start taking over city services. Can't wait for Officer Big Mac to be a reality.

Thought Mayor McCheese suspended him after he pistol-whipped the Hamburglar.
06-11-2018 , 12:48 PM
No way. McCheese always had law enforcement's back. And Hamburgler was no angel.

When I was a kid there was actually another MacDonaldland criminal - a pirate guy who stole fish sandwiches. He disappeared at some point (no idea if he came to a nefarious end or something). In reflection, it seems a little weird that McCheese never took any credit for cutting crime in half.

Someone should get Josh Whedon to spin up a McDonald’s Cinematic Universe series of movies. Can’t wait to see the Fishburglar’s backstory in Fishburglar Begins.

According to the mcdonald’s wiki, this character was called Captain Crook, which is the dopest name ever.

I'm sure the copyright lawyers made him go to Neverland.
