I agree substantially with this - but it also comes with the cost of reduced medical research, reduced remuneration for staff, and operators not being held accountable for bad management decisions (amongst others).

The US doesn’t even try tbh because of our perverse profit incentives.
It also has a bunch of regulatory challenges which exacerbate the problem, such as (substantially) tying insurance to work, limiting insurance options, amongst others.

Having a baseline public option with optional pay ups, primarily for faster service or boutique treatments, would appear to me to be the ideal compromise.
I like where you're heading with this, but it's hard to determine what falls into the baseline public option - once you agree on the taxes required to fund it, there's huge amounts of public debate abut what to include. For example, joint-replacement surgery and pain treatment (especially in the case of treating arthritis) are all now being restricted from the "baseline public option" in the UK.

A Brit/Aussie going to bat for the US healthcare system is the exact equal and opposite of someone in Bubmble**** Arkansas bashing European socialized medicine. You guys are made for each other.

WaPo's getting in on the "sad white people" stories:

Waaah I just have a HS diploma and make $5.75 more than minimum wage but have no one to talk to because I refuse to learn any of their language after working with them for years.

Just waiting for Dominic's Pony to post that and we'll be good

Don't be too shy to use next month's vote on Kelley.

Kelly, meanwhile, is a survivor. Yesterday afternoon, Trump marked his first year as chief with a tweet. “Congratulations to General John Kelly. Today we celebrate his first full year as @WhiteHouse Chief of Staff!” Trump wrote. Afterward, according to two sources familiar with the matter, Trump turned to aides and said, “Now can I get rid of him?” But The Wall Street Journal reported that Kelly told staffers Trump had asked him to stay on at least until 2020.

Not every day that three people post the same article on the same day.

Hey guys, have you heard that Nate Silver thinks there's something fishy happening on Intrade?

To be fair, they weren't all posted in the same thread. I have no idea what ya'll are talking about in some threads. Like, for example, the super blindingly obvious troll thread created yesterday that's apparently picked up steam.

I've rechecked this thread like 3 times to make sure it's not in here, feels like I'm taking crazy pills. I'm guessing it was posted in "Trump's America" which is probably a better fit.

There were 6 attempts to change this in Parliament, all of them failing. At one point a politician called for homosexuals to be "tracked down and wiped out". Eventually Australia signed a treaty which made the laws unconstitutional and they were invalidated by the High Court.

Irony is Tasmania is now one of the most LGBT friendly places in the world. I don't know what changed. I assume it was a case of waiting for people to die, as is the plan with Trumpkins. I guess also there are only like 500,000 people in the whole state which means public opinion can change quickly.

BTW has anyone else listened to the latest Chapo ep where they read from a book co-written by Meghan McCain? Holy ****. Dinesh D'Souza remains at the top of my punch in the face wishlist but Meghan making a strong case for #2. Would put her at roughly a 99% chance to be guillotined when the revolution comes.

I'm still under 30 but it makes me sad I'm not a lock to outlive Meghan like I am with 99% of deplorables. Too bad her dad never taught her to fly

I did. Both funny and infuriating at the same time.

I like how she thought that presenting herself as a basket of hypocrisies and contradictions would give her some kind of legitimacy as an independent thinker when all it did was make her look like a complete moron. She was trying so hard to come off as progressive and forward-thinking but is so closed off from the rest of the world that she doesn't know what that entails. It's like watching a white guy attempt to act like a black guy.

The View clip where she panicked at Behar and the audience not immediately buckling after she rattles off her pre-memorized Venezuela anecdote is so ****ing good.

She went off on the same topic on Twitter and got ratioed. Pretty embarrassing.

Chapo guys are insanely informed. Do they script their podcast the same way the PSA guys do? I've seen the PSA videos on YT and they all have laptops in front of them which makes me think that it's pretty heavily scripted stuff.

I have no idea why so many people are treating you like a good faith interlocutor, but no you don't agree. And don't ****ing try to talk back with big words. Public policy opinion is above your ****ing station in life, Josem.

Your daddy might make a good living at the crisps factory or whatever the **** he does, but you ain't ****ing clever enough to pull this **** off.

Young Republicans have at least embraced the passion of being ****ing Nazis, there's some drama here. Young Tories trying to act like they are being reasonable then, when confronted with the failures of the market in the US health care system, trying to pivot back to blaming the government?

The dispute here is simple. You believe that dead poor people are preferable to high taxes. I disagree. This is a moral disagreement.

Everything else, all the wonkery, all the numbers, that's all for show, but just to make very very clear that's also only for me. None of the tweed jacketed public school buggery enthusiasts you learn your talking points from are intellectuals, son, subject matter expertise is only for us. Never for you.

FlyWf,

I don't know whether your post is a parody or not. But either way, I love your passion.

May be in the minority here, put I like Pod Save America. I'm to the point where I mostly tune out the daily madness, it's a good bi-weekly summary.

Phreet has Bill Browder this week. That will be good.

Fly is the forum attack dog. Don't think I've seen him come off as mild-mannered here.

I know this isn't the podcast thread, but I find PSA to be kind of repetitive. It's pretty much the same thing every episode. It's always, "Hey let's talk about how horrible everything is and make bad jokes about it." Lovett is the only person who isn't incredibly boring. They have way too much trust in the establishment to do the right thing and spend way too much time blowing Obama when he clearly never gave a damn about them. Listening to CTH go off on Pfeiffer's book was great. That story in Pfeiffer's book about Obama talking about some girlfriend he had was golden.

That said, I recommend The Wilderness. I also recommend skipping the first 3 episodes of it since it's just a review of what has already happened. I don't agree with everything they say. I hate the idea of trying to win back some of the non-college educated white vote bull****. But it's kind of a post-mortem on the state of the party.

Chapo Trap House is growing on me the more I listen to them. I don't get all of the in-jokes and gaming references but I do find them funny.

Browder was on a while back and it was very good imo
