Ving Rhames had a neighbor call 911 on him saying a big black man had broken into a house.

Multiple police and a police dog knocked on Ving’s door with guns drawn.

I hope his neighbor contracts a chronic disease.

I’m sure conservatives are all over some wacky reasoning but my understanding is that SF in particular has had such an increase in housing prices that lots of people were suddenly priced out of their housing and had no real recourse other than to become homeless.

I think one of the blind spots we tend to have is how difficult some seemingly trivial things are for large portions of the population. I mean, I’ve changed apartments every two years or so, and it’s not a big deal to me, but they do run background/credit checks and lots of people struggle with that even if they can easily afford the place.

Be cool if background checks required presidential election voting disclosure.

My parents (who are not reactionary conservatives, but occasional visitors to see me and my sister) think it is. I trust their opinion, given that I wouldn't notice a change so much being there every day.

I was reading that in Seattle they got some funds set up to just buy homeless people plane tickets to get out. I'm sure that's probably the cheapest possible "solution". It wouldn't surprise me if other cities have something similar.
07-28-2018 , 10:01 PM
That would explain all the people hitchhiking up the 101 back towards Seattle.

Most big cities have some component of their homeless reduction program that's buying people tickets out of the city. Sometimes it's good if they've got someone to support them at the destination, but most of the time it was just shipping them out. Some New York mayor, it might be Cuomo, got in trouble because they were saying they reduced homelessness by some huge percent, but almost all of it was the mayor ramping up bus tickets out of the city to make his numbers look good.

For all I know my old roommate is still in his rent-controlled $1000/month 2-bedroom in Nob Hill with a nice view of the Bay. How could you ever move out?
I stayed in a hotel on the edge of Tenderloin around that time. The hotel owner warned me about the local area, which I didn't take too seriously until coming back late one night I seemed to spark unwanted interest from a small group of teenagers firing a gun in the street.

Has it become gentrified now?

So I do mental health on call at the local children's hospital and almost got myself arrested for interrupting a line of pretty harsh interrogation by cops in the ER to a grieving mother who just lost her 9 month old baby.

We really should have a lawyer on retainer or something who's on call for situations when kids or their families catch the attention of law enforcement. This lady could have told that cop to f*** off but cops dgaf and act as if you've got no option other than complying with what they want, and I'm not in a position to be advising kids or families about their legal rights.

Also, how admissible is info taken from an interrogation of a mother who was totally distraught over losing her baby minutes before?! If ever there was a time that someone would possibly produce inaccurate information due to emotional reasons it's then.

I also ran into similar troubles when I was working in mental health. The state police came to our facility to question someone who was in the middle of a manic episode over a sexual assault allegation.

I was present during the interview, and I tried to get the client in question to ask for lawyer, because the trooper conducting the interview was clearly trying to bait him into incriminating himself. He didn't want to do that, so the interview continued on. Thankfully the trooper wasn't interested in listening to him ramble for very long and the interview ended swiftly. Given enough time I'm sure this particular client could've been goaded into saying almost anything.

I really hate cops sometimes.

After interrogation in the middle of the damn ED had ended and mom went to cry with her sister, the lead cop stayed back to explain to me how he was just doing his job and that he had 3 kids of his own etc etc etc.

How about don't publicly and intensely interrogate grieving mothers who literally 5 minutes ago learned their infant son had suddenly died. Like regardless of whatever incriminating context may exist, just no.

And also, up your ass with your explanation, you just threatened to arrest me for obstructing justice (I assume?) by interrupting your line of questions.

I think if a city is going to go with the exportation strategy they need to fly them far away. It's a higher cost up front obviously, but I'm sure much cheaper than actually trying to care for them. Taking them to the next town over is never going to work.

Is there any sort of law being broken when cities do this?

Doubtful. Youngstown, OH dumps their vagrants in Sharon, PA. These towns are just across the state line from one another, just a few miles apart.

The facility I mentioned working at earlier ended up housing many of them because they were homeless in a place with no shelters and they end up in and out of the local hospital.

according to my local news on facebook Oklahoma has received the petition with the required number of signatures to put recreational marijuana on the ballot in time for the november election.

now we get to see how long the blood red state government can obstruct. they obstructed medical for almost 2 years after the petition was submitted timely.

Interesting, read that because my brother has had the same programming job for 10 years. Saw him today and talked about him possibly switching jobs or maybe working for the same big co. as an independent contractor, but he has 4 kids and wants to maintain his current level of job security.

I'm working with another programmer who basically developed a big/essential system over the last decade for a $100M company via his sole proprietorship, but all the IP is owned by the company under the contract. That's fine, and now the company wants to partner with my client to sell the system to other industry players (it's a regional industry). The sides need to come to an arrangement, where my client will hopefully be able to retire in relative comfort in a few years (i.e., he's close to retirement age and his IRA from his sole proprietorship ain't gonna cut it). Point being: it's always nice if you can develop an essential system in a niche area and control the IP. Failing that, be the only guy who understands the system and they'll have to pay you a decent amount anyway. [Note, many, even most, places will eventually try to cut you out anyway, because business people like to drive hard bargains and are too stupid to understand that an essential system cobbled together with equal parts genius and duct tape isn't the sort of thing that can be handed off to someone else without costing an arm and a leg, if even then.]

The guy I know who did best with programming is a college acquaintance (basically a friend of a college friend) who was one of the first five hires at FB. His options did well enough to donate a healthy 8 figures to our university, where he teaches as a leisure activity.
