Didn't think that would be a controversial statement. Canada doesn't have many great cities because Canada doesn't have very many people. The ratio is fine, but the absolute number is low.

If you believe it's big city life or bust when it comes to places worth living. Sounds a bit snobby to my ears, but whatever.

I've gone on record itf as preferring and advocating mid-size cities, and I currently live in a very small one. This started as a discussion of affordable alternatives to major, expensive US cities. It's not a question of somewhere being a comfortable place to lead a good life, it's whether a place is special enough to uproot everything and move to for somebody who already lives in a great city. I think there's a handful of Canadian cities that qualify, but like all desirable urban areas, they aren't very affordable.

It's something I actually spend a fair bit of time thinking about because there's maybe a 50/50 chance I end up in Canada sometime in the next 10 years, not because of the current political climate but simply because I can and I think it might be a better place to spend the last couple decades of my life. From the POV of somebody seriously considering it who has already spent a fair bit of time in the country and visited most of the provinces and major cities, it's a pretty mixed bag of pros and cons everywhere I've considered. Nowhere really stands out as a perfect destination, although many would be fine, and I'm sure I'd be content in many more if I already lived there.

It's also interesting to me in the context of the GTFO movement where people swear they're so pipin' hot furious they're going to pack their bags tomorrow when they clearly haven't put even 30 seconds of thought into what it would really mean to leave the country. I spend time drilling down into specific neighborhood demographics of cities I've already been to and like, in a country I already have citizenship in, and I'm still like, meh, maybe some day.

zz,

Being a citizen, but not a resident, and living close to Canada, can you pop up there for the medical care?

I don't think so. Not positive on this, but my understanding is health care is linked to the province you reside in, and I don't reside in any of them.

Re: July LC Thread **Survivor White House Edition**

You have to be a resident and file taxes in Canada to qualify for medical.

Z,

I’m a bit further down the path than you and agree with what you are saying. One thing that is becoming more clear to me is some of the trade-off that makes it a tough trigger to pull is leaving the aspects of the US that are unique to the US. The wish to find an American type city or area to live in is, for me I think a reluctance to give up what I imagined my life would be there. When it is more about leaving than the destination it’s just ****ing sad man. It’s like any breakup.

Aside from that, as far as the GTFO urgency vs action, I am also realizing that my perspective needs to include an actual cultural shift in the formula. It’s not just the quaint little ways that Canada is different, it is a different culture. People relate to each other differently, interact differently, speak differently and value different things. It is really easy and attractive to just pick out the “improvements” to make the decision simpler but it’s not honest. We both have had the option to live in either place and we chose the US for whatever reasons, but there are reasons whether we ever took the time to tally them up or not. It’s hard to give up.

I’m at the point where the compromises seem to hold less weight all the time. I don’t have the rosey expectations I used to for life in the US anymore, so what I am giving up diminishes.

Re: July LC Thread **Survivor White House Edition**

I can't find the article but a Republican candidate found a run around direct campaign contributions. He loaned his campaign money for previous campaigns and then asked campaign donors to pay the legal limit to his previous campaigns in addition to the legal limit for this year's campaign to help pay off the 'debt' his campaign was paying back to him. He then turned around and loaned his new campaign that incoming cash flow because apparently there isn't a limit of how much you can loan your own campaign.

Do these people not get that they're giving him loads of publicity? I would have never heard about this show if it wasn't for Sarah Palin and now I'm completely hyped for it.

A Henderson man*facing terrorism charges in Arizona*for using an armored vehicle to block traffic on the bridge near Hoover Dam has written letters from jail to President Donald Trump and other elected officials bearing the motto of a right-wing conspiracy group known as QAnon.

The letters do not explain Matthew Wright’s motive for*the 90-minute incident on the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge*on June 15, but they do contain an intriguing clue. Both include the signoff “For where we go one, we go all.”

That phrase is popular among followers of QAnon, a murky plot unfolding online that casts Trump as the shrewd hero in a secret campaign to expose evil, left-wing global elites responsible for everything from child sex trafficking to the Oct. 1 massacre in Las Vegas

Seriously. Who hasn’t seen Fresh? It is a great movie. It is not only the isolated rampant racism (what?) but that these goofs don’t have enough self awareness to know why their lack of exposure makes them ignorant and in turn feeds their racism.

You have to be either a very isolated very ignorant white person or a dog whistlin’ pos to be surprised black people might play chess.

Either way you should not be allowed in ANY state capitol let alone run for a governorship. I know I grew up in a world of white privilege but even as I child I was aware of my own ignorance and how that colored my perspectives on the world.
