I always got tons of badly-written Japanese applications that just obviously didn’t know wtf they were doing, that was a pretty easy job. Some law firm is scamming the hell out of Japanese inventors.

Yes, just like a Ben Shapiro who believes in universal healthcare, higher taxation, and unions.

Is Elon Musk really the billionaire that needs to be taken down a few pegs? To me that seems like a (mainly fictitious) Bernie supporter trolling against Hillary in the general election. Trump is president, backed by the Kochs, Adelson, the Mercers, and 100 other very rich scumbags and Elon's the guy to go after.

ever since the unions lost the backing of the mafia they lost their teeth and became ineffective and tools of the capitalists who can afford to buy off leadership

bring back the mafia! ScreaminAsian2020!

I used to goof off at the patent office by searching for the nuttiest patent applications I could find. Somewhere I’ve got a list of them, I should try and find it.

Dick Cheney looks like death. He'll probably live 40 more years.

This is all I ask. More spaceships and tunnels, less attention whoring.

Wha? Are we just ignoring the most recent tweet because reasons?

I’m sorry, but after all the damage centrists in sheeps clothing have done to the progressive movement, maybe yeah, Musk is one of the billionaires we should go after.

The search for the billionaire that doesn't need to be taken down a few pegs is ongoing so I don't get your point.

Elon is not the worst guy in the world but that is not exactly the tweetstorm ain't exactly lovable.

The only reason Elon gets **** is as a reaction to the hero worship.

Is "on tilt" that widely used or is Yglesias a poker player?

It was pinball before it was poker, so who knows?

Would anybody be interested in doing this as a draft? I worked in the hot sun all afternoon and it started to seem like a good idea after awhile.

Ah. Well a little less laziness on my part produces this.

"Tilt" is pretty mainstream now tho, I've heard it a number of times outside poker circles.
07-09-2018 , 09:13 PM
Like wookie said, tilt came from pinball and was used as it is for non-poker non-pinball things before any poker boom.
07-09-2018 , 09:23 PM
I feel dumb for not making the "tilt" connection to pinball myself.

If it was, it wasn't used often. Can't remember any use of it in films (excepting Rounders), tv shows, etc. before the boom.

Is there any compelling etymology that tilt comes from pinball? Poker tilt is playing like **** and losing all your money. When you tilt a pinball machine the game just stops.
07-09-2018 , 10:11 PM
I never played much pinball so I forgot, but tilt was used in the "off your game" sense and was associated with pinball, maybe because if you got frustrated you you'd be more inclined to cheat by tilting the machine. There are references to that in old cartoons- a tilt sign would sometimes appear when Bugs Bunny or whoever got his nemesis really mad. Naturally I can't find a quick example on yt though.

Eta I guess that doesn't mean it originated with pinball.

It's mentioned in several books about poker and poker history. Then again, poker books, or accepted poker history, sometimes plays fast and loose with actual history (I'm looking at you Nick the Greek vs. Johnny Moss six month poker game that didn't actually happen.)

Aside, I've read that AK was called "walking back to Houston" because the old rounders played it so well they sent their opponents home broke without cab or bus fare, but I've also read it was called that because people would overplay it and find themselves walking back to Houston. They can't both be correct, can they?

Tilt (1979) is the story of a young girl, who is a pinball machine wizard. Because she does not get on with her parents, Tilt is contemplating running away from home, and skipping school one day she decides to go to Mickey's Bar. Mickey, who is Tilt's good friend, helps her set up a gambler for a pinball game. Because the gambler is unaware of Tilt's pinball wizardry, he is easily hustled out of his money...
When you get mad at pinball you rough-handle the game and tilt it. It's definitely where the poker term came from.
