I'm ready for Elon to STFU and stay out of the news for awhile.

Notes from the midwest:

My parents finally cancelled the KC Star home delivery. Which is the size of a small pamphlet now, but had gone up to $80/month. It costs $2 in a vending machine. Freaking vulture capitalists.

Everyone Boomer (and younger) in my family including my technophobic Dad has Netflix now. Cable/satellite is so ****ed.

The local Sinclair station news felt the need to show us footage of an incident in Massachusettes where a scary black dude punched a woman in the kitchen of a restaurant. Then a different woman pulled a gun and the guy backed off. This is definitely local newsworthy in KC - as we need to be scared of black men and know that guns will save us.

Oh look - KC's Most Wanted. Pretty sure they didn't do that when I was a kid. Looks like 3 scary black guys, one white sex offender, and one hot chick who clearly is not guilty.

JFC - Kris Kobach wants his kids to grow up in a Kansas that's safe from crime and terrorism. Yeah man those wheat fields are gonna get blown up any day now.

The local news runs from 9 to 11 or something. 3 out of every 4 segments are scary looking black people doing something scary. For some reason some riots in Haiti are IMPORTANT LOCAL NEWS for Kansas Citians.

Hey it's a story on a local business hurt by tariffs. Final line by the anchor: "Now this week Mr. Trump acknowledged there would be some short term problems with the tariffs, but that the benefits will be long term". Well good we can all sleep at night now.

Can confirm that small-town midwesterners are legit worried that international terrorists will target their bum**** town instead of like New York or L.A. or whatever.

I envision a Spotify model where you pay $5 a month and get a whole host of sites with no ads or with fast-track speeds or something.

Ad-blocking is only getting better. Something’s gonna give sooner than later.

Lol some guy at my poker table in Vegas was talking about this remarkable life saving thing that the doctor noticed on a checkup and it only cost him like $20k to save his life.

I made some comment about how "I have no clue why you guys hate Obamacare so much - that would've cost you zero in Canada" and some guy said he was a "health care professional" and mentioned how expensive health care is in Canada.

I gave him the cold stats yo and everyone called me a liar and I called them ******s (probably not smart) and everyone tried to knock me out after that.

I definitely didn't mention that I was still up tens of thousands of dollars being an Obamacare lover after knocking people out

x-posting from OOT Netflix thread, since this has a somewhat political bent:

I watched the trailer and it appeared quite funny in the beginning but then sunk when even the trailer got preachy. Does this represent the special because it seemed like the death of comedy?
So, that's a thing.

If you think SJWs are a real thing that exist and they're the scourge of society, you probably won't like this special, but otherwise, I went into this having no idea who she was (I think earlier I read a story about the new season of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee that linked to another story about Gadsby's special and how good it was and was like "oh, ok, I'll check it out") and was pretty blown away. The best comparison I can make is to Bo Burnham's special Make Happy, in the way that he tries to make his comedy special about something much bigger than just jokes and comedy itself - but she (and this is not to put Burnham down at all) accomplishes that way, way better than he does.
To add more context, a big part of Gadsby's show is the fact that she's a lesbian who grew up in an extremely homophobic place in Australia during an extremely homophobic time, and her intense and personal story is a big part of what makes this special so compelling. Politards should watch it.

I like Gadsby. I assume she goes into it in the special, but Tasmania criminalised homosexual activity until 1997 and had to be made to stop after Australia signed a treaty making the laws unconstitutional. When attitudes changed they changed hard though, has some of the strongest LGBT laws in the country now.

Basing policies on evidence seems... good?

The United States also insisted that the words “evidence-based” accompany references to long-established initiatives that promote breast-feeding, which critics described as a ploy that could be used to undermine programs that provide parents with feeding advice and support.

Elisabeth Sterken, director of the Infant Feeding Action Coalition in Canada, said four decades of research have established the importance of breast milk, which provides essential nutrients as well as hormones and antibodies that protect newborns against infectious disease.

Scientists are loath to carry out double-blind studies that would provide one group with breast milk and another with breast milk substitutes. “This kind of ‘evidence-based’ research would be ethically and morally unacceptable,” Ms. Sterken said.
So yeah. On the surface this seems reasonable, but its actually a bad faith attempt to hold breast milk advocates to a standard that is impossible to meet for obvious ethical reasons.

Theres plenty of evidence and it is completely uncontroversial unless you are on the take.

I understand your skepticism, but yes, these milk companies ARE really that bad. They are DIRECTLY responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths due to their deliberate predatory practices.

The best comparison is the tobacco companies, except the tobacco execs usually smoked. No milk company exec is feeding their baby with dirty water and formula in the village after their breast milk dries up from free samples in the hospital given by sales reps that dress up and pretend to be nurses.
Fight.

On one hand, it's such an obvious evil empire corporate ploy that you're left awestruck, and on the other hand it's probably the only time the anything-but-natural-and-whole-foods-are-the-darkest-magicks people accidentally won one, because the breastmilk topic is such a softball. So eh.

The confusion is caused because statements like this,

Quote:

are gibberish. And she knows it's gibberish but she doesn't really have an alternative.

Someone did this on Queer Eye and it was both hilariously absurd and sweetly on brand for the show (it was a closeted gay man who came out to his parents during the show, then listed his remodeled place like 3 days later and moved in with his boyfriend).

LOL you gotta be ****ing kidding me the way nerds treat Elon Musk like he is their special needs child is insane. He's a billionaire and a large chunk of that money is tax incentives you paid for!

i don't understand how anyone could be so cynical as to think a billionaire narcissist who has been buried in bad press for months would only attach himself to a huge international news story in order to look good. smh

simpliciticus is not a nerd. Trolly is.

Elon is a "visionary" like Steve Jobs. Nerds like Wozniak.

(Coming from Cal, Simplicitus should be on team Woz regardless.)

Good news, everyone.

The party formerly known as Front National might not just morally but also financially bankrupt. Because assistants to EU parlamentarians have illegally been used for party purposes a 2 million Euro payment has been withheld. According to Le Pen the party only has sufficient funds left to operate through August.
