Probably slow pony, but the rescue operation started

Been feeling like these kids were probably doomed but for some reason right now I feel like this operation is gonna go well and they're all gonna make it.

Is there no thread on the thai cave situation?
07-08-2018 , 12:54 AM
No. Thing is that no media is allowed there so it'll be slim pickings for updates. If it's really 3 hours each way to the third chamber and they're rescuing one kid at a time, we're talking days to finish this though I speculate that they'll know what's what before then.

No thread. I don't see much news coverage either. BBC is doing updates here: https://www.bbc.com/news/live/44755093

It feels like a desperate move. They haven't given details of how the rescue is supposed to work. They moved the media off site. It'll be tomorrow morning (~6 ET) before they can actually have anyone out. It's a scary situation. Hoping for the best.

I've been to Thailand a couple of times: once during dry season and once during the wet season. I wasn't there for long in the latter case but when it rained it poured like a mother****er.

That's why people are moving now rather than waiting. If the rains get heavy, the rescue will become even more difficult and in very dire circumstances could lead to the kids and coach drowning.

I agree that it's a pretty desperate move but circumstances are probably unlikely to get better than they are now.

****ing ghoulish. I hate the media for selling me this story with glitzy CNN infographics of what level of oxygen deprivation the kids are at, I hate myself for following this ****, can we just skip ahead and let me know everyone got out okay.

Reinhold Messner was the first man to climb Mt. Everest without the use of compressed oxygen. When he was interviewed by a reporter, he was asked…”Why did you go up there knowing you could have died? Why did you go up there to die?” He responded…

“I didn’t go up there to die. I went up there to live.”

What did you expect?

Only way we hear anything soonish is if things went catastrophically. This could take days and the media isn't allowed near the site to get updates.

In their messages to their families those kids are showing a lot of courage in circumstances that must be terrifying for them.

Meanwhile, the BBC are attempting to keep us updated on their website and have embedded this:

Thailand's government has released details about the rescue plan.

The government has distributed a GFX about how the boys will dive out from Tham Luang cave:

equipment - air tanks, full face masks

two divers accompanying one child

they dive together, guided by the rope placed by the rescuers

when facing a very narrow path, they will release the tank from the back and slowly roll the tank and guide the kid through the channel

from Chamber 3 to the cave's mouth they will walk

The government says the advantages are that this could be done fast and without using much resources.

But it also warns that this requires requires high-level skills of the divers; the boys should have some diving skills, strong mind and should not be panicking.

4 of the boys are out.

Fantastic news so far. Confidence is much higher. They took the weakest kids out first. The group of divers guiding the kids is small, only 18 of them. Fatigue is a factor.

Taking time to refill the oxygen tanks now.
07-08-2018 , 11:47 AM
This is the opposite of what the BBC said. Not sure which would be better but either way, it's great that it's gone well so far.

Could be that they were trying to perfect the operation with the kids who would be easiest and then move on to the more challenging ones. Or they were triaging and don't expect everyone to get out. Pretty grim if its that.
07-08-2018 , 12:04 PM
From the little I've heard 'unhealthy' is more like weak and malnourished. They may be giving the weaker kids time to regain their strength.
07-08-2018 , 12:41 PM
great, now we're going to get 40 hours of interviews with people who have been in a cave before on BBC since there's no media at the actual site.
07-08-2018 , 01:22 PM
Getting a few of these kids out alive already has buoyed my confidence (in both the situation and just the world in general since we don’t seem to get enough good news). Was definitely concerned the whole thing was going to end badly but seems like they at least have a plan.

Multiple sources familiar with the proposal told The Daily Beast that UCI has said it wants to cut 15 percent of current staff across Onion Inc., which include satirical websites The Onion and Clickhole, as well as pop-culture fixture The A.V. Club and food site The Takeout.

CNN are such cucks. They have Trumps tweet about the cave as the second headline down on the front page.

I know a lot of people in comedy and it’s been rough going for sites that monetize through ads. Funny or Die basically let their whole staff go because they couldn’t be profitable anymore even though they were basically just an ad house featuring celebrities at this point.
