thats crazy. had a similar experience the second time I flew. had no idea it was an issue until we landed.

we were flying into chicago from vegas and a winter storm was just hitting. it was really windy. plane tried to land 2 or 3 times (cant remember) and aborted near the runway each time. I was in a window and didnt understand what was going on but I liked the view. no one said a word and I didnt realize it was a tense situation. finally landed the final time and everyone started cheering and carrying on and some ppl drew crosses.

pretty sure we were the last plane into the airport and they sure as hell didnt let my next flight leave til the morning. comped me 50% on a hotel, gee thanks.

anyway, yours sounds way worse with ppl actually throwing up.

rollercoaster turbulence in an airplane was legit the scariest thing i've ever experienced in my life, and i've been in a wide variety of some super hairy situations.
01-06-2019 , 01:02 PM
I’ve read a bunch and fully understand that planes basically never crash because of turbulence. Does absolutely nothing to keep me from being terrified when it happens.
01-06-2019 , 01:06 PM
see, this is the thing. you can say you "fully understand", but you don't. sorry, but you don't. it's like variance in poker, you may be aware that crazy things can happen but you can't fully appreciate the level of horror until you actually experience it. if you "fully understood", then you wouldn't bat an eye over it.

Life is pointless. Go skydiving.

Hang gliding seems awesome. My late-step-father-in-law was hang gliding in his 60s (did not die hang gliding). There's a place near me where you can go solo just down a hill going onto the beach. You never get more than like 15' high - about 200' flights. I've done that.

Being on a plane is such a weird experience, from the sense that statistically it is absurdly safe, yet no matter how many times you repeat that to yourself, the slightest thing going wrong (turbulence, bad weather, aborted landing) brings up the much stronger emotion of "what the ****, hurtling through the air at 500 miles an hour is not something we were meant to do, we flew too close to the sun, we are definitely going to die".

And like, you know that every day tens of thousands of planes are taking off and all of them experience the same things, and they all (at least, all the ones like the one you're on) land safely. Yet you can't shake that feeling.

If anyone wants to trigger some magaconservatives, vote for Alexandria Occasio Cortez in the latest Ms. OOT thread here: https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/3...ortez-1732714/

Done. Search function says I have 63 posts in OOT between 2007 and 2016. Haven't voted in earlier rounds. Not sure whether my vote counts, but it's very close right now (50/49).
01-06-2019 , 03:16 PM
50/53 now. Lektor will be seething.
01-06-2019 , 03:17 PM
Was just going to post that Lektor must be getting pissed. He’s going to have to make up another rule to disqualify some of the votes from posters who were posting in OOT back when some of the current posters were literally still in diapers.
01-06-2019 , 03:19 PM
I'm not allowed to vote (even though every one of my votes counted aside from the one for AOC as far as I know) so I'm tempted to vote for Robbie just to **** with the numbers.
01-06-2019 , 03:24 PM
If you vote for robbie he'll definitely count your vote. Just like Republicans in control of voter roles, it isn't actually about the sanctity of the vote, they just pretend that it is

I was surprised to learn that I have over 100 posts in OOT (and probably more if you include posts from before the great thread deletion, whenever that was?). Kinda embarrassing, really
01-06-2019 , 03:26 PM
Do they count posts from the old software? Because I don’t think the search feature does.

It's not all bad there - there's the interesting wkis thread and the things that piss you off that shouldn't and er...

This is a good troll

Sorely tempted to send in my army of gimmick accounts to jack up the score.

Speaking of hang gliding I recently saw this video with it. Pretty terrifying

Wait in case they're needed at the last minute imo Trolly.

Great job hanging on by that guy.

I know the other guy is the expert, but if you're ever doing anything where your life depends on being hooked into something you really should have a basic understanding of what hooks you on and be sure that you are hooked on before you take off.

Yeah I don't have experience with hang gliding, but based on my experience climbing I have to imagine that these guys failed to execute the completely standard basic safety checks that are supposed to be verified by both parties before take off. (Similar to how climbers verify each others harnesses, knots, and that they're on belay before leaving the ground.)
