Cardboard isn't worth much, but something to recyclers. None of the recycling places I've been to take plastic bags.

But using fewer packaging in the first place is obviously much better.

How many diets are pseudo science? I kept hearing people talk about the Keto diet and when I looked it up it appears to be completely bogus in terms of actual health, it might work on weight loss.

The purpose of the keto diet is weight loss. Some people also say they feel better on it. Re whether it works for weight loss, evidence is inconclusive. I tend to think that the quest for something that works for the whole human race is a fool's errand. People's bodies are different, different things work for different people.

All specialist diets claiming to improve general health are pseudoscience. Really the only two diet rules you need are 1. Eat a range of foods including a reasonable amount of plant matter 2. Avoid processed food.

A lot of fad diets work merely because any sort of formal diet plan makes people pay attention to what they're eating instead of going for junk food.

I'm not super familiar with this keto thing, but it sure seems like an awful lot of fat, according to wiki.

(1)
Do ketogenic diets work?
(2)
Is there a yo-yo effect?
(3)
Is a KD safe for obese subjects?

There is no doubt that there is strong supportive evidence that the use of ketogenic diets in weight loss therapy is effective [13], however the mechanisms underlying the effects of KDs on weight loss is still a subject of debate. Atkins’ original hypothesis suggested that weight loss was induced by losing energy through excretion of ketone bodies [36], but more recently different hypotheses have been proposed: one hypothesis is that the use of energy from protein in KD is an “expensive” process for the body and so can lead to a “waste of calories” and therefore increased weight loss compared to other “less expensive” diets [37]. During the first phase of a KD 60–65 g of glucose per day are needed by the body, 16% of this is obtained from glycerol whilst the major part is derived via gluconeogenesis from proteins, of either dietary or tissue origin [38]. Gluconeogenesis is an energy-demanding process calculated at approximately 400–600 Kcal/day (due to both endogenous and food source proteins [37]. There is though no direct experimental evidence to support this intriguing hypothesis, on the contrary a recent study reported that there were no changes in resting energy expenditure after a KD [39]. Some authors claim instead that the results obtained with ketogenic diets could be attributed to a reduction in appetite due to higher satiety effect of proteins [38,40] or to some effects on appetite control hormones [41]. Other authors suggest a possible direct appetite suppressant action of the ketone bodies [42] and more in detail by the BHB that it is supposed to act both as a energy/satiety signal (according to Kennedy’s lipostatic theory) and as central satiety signal per se [26]. Over the long term the improvement in fat oxidation mirrored by the decrease of RR (respiratory ratio) could explain the fat loss effect of this kind of diet [39]. Hence we can summarize (listed in order of available evidence) the hypothesized mechanisms of KD’s weight loss effects:

(1)
Reduction in appetite due to higher satiety effect of proteins [38,40], effects on appetite control hormones [41] and to a possible direct appetite suppressant action of the ketone bodies [42];
(2)
Reduction in lipogenesis and increased lipolysis [33,43];
(3)
Greater metabolic efficiency in consuming fats highlighted by the reduction in the resting respiratory quotient [39,44,45];
(4)
Increased metabolic costs of gluconeogenesis and the thermic effect of proteins [37,46].

99.8% of everything people believe about nutrition is pseudoscience. People know more about cars and basically all people know about cars is put-gas-in-make-go.

Keto diet won't kill you but it's not pleasant.

Returning to plastic bags for a moment, it's not like I never end up with them. I just don't coal roll them. If it's not too much trouble, I use something else or go without.

This cite is a meta-analysis comparing ketogenic diets to low-fat diets specifically. Since low-fat diets are a straight up wretched idea, it's not surprising that the ketogenic diets came out better, but this doesn't establish that ketogenic diets are better than relatively low-carbohydrate diets which are not ketogenic.

btw, the injunction to avoid processed foods will naturally give you a lower-carbohydrate diet than the general public, because so much carbohydrate is consumed in the form of processed foods (bread, pasta, foods with sugars added, etc etc).

Yeah, it's hard to establish anything because it's hard to know with certainty exactly what people's diets are and people don't want to submit to controlled studies on their diets. On top of that the field is riddled with absolute garbage science, and "nutritionists" are usually people without any qualifications who are like 20 years behind in their knowledge, which was nonsense even when current. The history of nutrition science is "whoops, it turns out things are more complicated than we thought and we gave terrible advice, our bad" repeated like 20 times. Just ignore it all and eat whole unprocessed food.

I'd assumed with people noticing trump eating Mcdonald's and never exercising and achieving quasi-immortality they might think, hmmmm.

Poor JT over here is doing backflips but never actually restating his assumptions:

sure there's probably an undiscovered better diet but contemporary research is still trying to figure out ketosis, and prodding it from a ton of angles we have hard scientific evidence that it does work

Re: January LC Thread **Survivor White House Edition**

A couple months ago I experimented with a keto diet just to see if I could get myself to go into ketosis. I was successful in getting into ketosis, but the problem was its really hard to stick to the diet because the amount of carbs is so tiny. I basically had to plan everything out way in advance. I felt good on it but i just don't think its that practical so I decided to stick to my paleo-ish diet.

2018 is full of computer security news...
yesterday: everything with a microphone and an internet connection has a backdoor (some patched)
today: every cpu connected to the internet has a backdoor and the patches kill performance

Intel says 'fake news': https://newsroom.intel.com/news/inte...arch-findings/

True, but it's all essentially just a way to trick yourself into not overeating, which is the ultimate goal.

In the US it seems to be the opposite. Nobody is hiring nutritionists to tell them about ideal glycemic-index levels and what not, they're taking nutrition advice from their family GP doctors.

Yeah, because saturated fat was the devil incarnate for cardiovascular health. Then it turned out that only certain saturated fats are bad for cardiovascular health, that even the "bad" ones weren't as bad as people thought, and that high-carb diets are worse for inflammation and cardiovascular health than high-fat diets are. Oops!

"Trick" is kind of a slanted way of putting it. It's just easier to eat a pile of calories eating carbs. I could probably eat 1000 calories worth of pasta, eating the same of chicken breast would involve eating 2.25lb raw weight of chicken in a sitting, which is like impossible. I don't think that's the only benefit personally btw, but it's an open question.

Basically, human biochemistry is insanely complex, test subjects exhibit lots of variance and there are no real control groups so a lot of nutrition is educated guesswork. No one really knows what an "ideal" diet is, but the standard USA#1 diet is so bad that any fad diet is probably an improvement.
