I'm no psychologist, but playing one on the internet, my thinking (lately anyway) is that negative thoughts are self-reinforcing. Dwelling on such things makes for more robust neural pathways and then despite being harmful overall you find those thought patterns comforting in the moment. It may not be pleasant, but compulsive or attractive like a pressing on a sore tooth.
So, my advice is to refrain from thinking about your imaginary friend as much as possible if you think it's making you unhappy. Maybe try thinking some positive things even if it seems fake. And try not to think about the past or future much. They don't even exist.
