O CANADA

I assume Chapter 12 discusses how slaves "agreed to do chores in exchange for free room and board"

Kip Thorne was one of the named winners for the physics Nobel today. I went to a public lecture on black holes that he gave at the University of Utah ~15 years ago. I was glad I got there early because the hall filled up quickly. He waited to start and joked around while they opened a couple of extra rooms with video monitors. He seemed surprised to be so popular, but of course he'd already been famous for a long time. Today he's saying he wanted the whole LIGO team to get the prize. Lol Nobel and team in the same sentence, but good for him.

I get nothing. It doesn't even pretend to try to load. I even uninstalled and re-installed thinking that would solve it, as it had solved it on my Apple devices in the past, butnahhh. No idea why.

I read and reread his book Black Holes and Time Warps when I was in high school. Good for him.

So much of modern science is based on huge collaborative efforts. It makes sense to shift to awarding tmore medals to teams instead of individuals.

Will the rest of the world start sanctioning us already?

I did some work for a Trumpkin, gave him the benefit of doubt and he seemed pretty cool, but turns out he is a dick. Nothing serious, just a little passive aggressive douchery. There's all the talk about psychological differences between liberals and conservatives, but a lot of it may just come down to conservatives being dicks.

Confirmation bias or truth?

I'd say the defining feature of modern day conservatives is a lack of empathy, so I vote truth.

A good way to win this is to pick the person who seems the most sane.

So Tillerson.

Now we go pull Trump tweets where he's promising to champion LGBT rights

Sharia Law: Actually not completely bad!

I think being a Trumpkin in place like LA where you're swimming upstream greatly raises the odds on being a dick.

Could be. It was in La Palma though. I bet Trump did OK in La Palma.

I work in PACU, so I take care of patients waking up from anesthesia after surgeries.

Anyway, I got a patient who was a huge conservative Trump fan. We got onto the topic of politics because his stay with me was extended do to his incredibly high tolerance of opioid pain medications. Anyway, it started out with him saying "I bet you're a liberal and voted Hillary". To which I replied yes. Then he asked me if I believed in abortion. To which I replied, "like do I think it exists".

Now, I try to stay out of these types of conversations with patients because... it's just not very professional. But also, I like my job (okay this is a lie) and don't want to lose it (because it pays really good money) and I work in a position where patients are fairly vulnerable. So I was trying to gracefully exit the conversation.

But then he started in on the "And these women who abort their babies right before they're born!!"

So I, as pleasantly as I could, started to educate him. I discussed in great detail what happens to a woman in late-term pregnancies who would abort their babies. I explained how fetuses can grow wrong, the myriad of horrifying and painful conditions that are fatal. Then I explained what happens to a woman if a fetus dies inside of her and she can't get it out. He ended up agreeing that those cases it was not such a horrible thing. Which was progress.

Eventually we got onto other political topics where he repeated some factual inaccuracies.
When I corrected him and told him he was reading biased information, he actually was able to admit to it. Anyway, we ended our conversation with him agreeing to read some not-conservative news sources.

I like to think it might have made a little bit of a difference.

CBS fires exec who wrote on Facebook that LV victims are gun-toting Republicans who don't deserve sympathy

Hey, conservatives who cry their asses off every time a right-winger gets fired for deplorable political speech, I'm sure you're going to rush to her defense, right?

(meanwhile, I think this firing is totally deserved!)

I'm not sure how long you have to live in LA to know where La Palma is, but 17 years is not enough apparently.

Several 100 posts on chiefsplanet dedicated to this. They found the real villain in this whole story.

Also it looks like this was some kind of private message group, and someone captured it? Or is FB just trying to promote messenger by confusing the issue some more?

I really don't think anyone has ever had a political argument/conversation that resulted in a changed mind. Ever.

Awesome! You should ask them if they have consistent opinions on <insert latest deplorable fired for being deplorable>

I convinced a conservative that the voter fraud thing was BS. Not by any logic, but because it was a waste of money. Not sure how that worked out tbh.
