Billions of dollars are spent on massive propaganda campaigns to the muddy the waters both on politics in general and on specific, pet issues. The GOP does a pretty good job at getting single issue voters, who don't support a single other thing that they are up to, to vote for them.

The amygdala is a hell of a drug. Fear is a better motivator than optimism.

Definitely this. I also think one of the biggest indicators of Republican voters is a lack of empathy. A vast majority of the Rs I interact with do not possess the ability to understand or care about anybody other than themselves. The Republican agenda fits nicely in to that world view. They're also incapable of understanding why all of the terrible stuff the Republicans do is terrible because most of it doesn't directly affect them.

You are right. One of my exes voted for Trump simply because of abortion. I talked with her after the election and she was pretty progressive on every other issue, but ****ing abortion outweighed everything. Had to vote for Don the Con because "Democrats support the murder of babies".

That was the beginning of the end with her.

100% true

It is the only universal similarity that I have seen in the deplorables I know. That and extreme selfishness which often goes hand-in-hand with the lack of empathy.

My brother in law still voted for Trump after he found out a week before the election that his niece had been raped. It's true, empathy is foreign to these deplorables.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Republican Rick Saccone conceded defeat to Democrat Conor Lamb on Wednesday night in a closely watched special election in Pennsylvania, more than a week after the end of a remarkable race that has shaken GOP confidence ahead of the November midterm elections.

This is semi OT, but if I had to summarize my difficulties with Americans so far by a single personality trait, it would be the lack of empathy. It took my wife and I about a month of confusion till we were able to pin point the difference in mentality.
There's some sympathy shown, but it seems to be totally replacing the ability to feel any empathy.

Not sure if it's a Southern thing or not as I can't really compare it to other parts of the USA, but it is totally prevalent in my day-to-day dealings with locals.

I am sorry about that Yuv. I hope I didn't make you feel that way when we hung out.

Are you apologizing on behalf of your nation? That's another weird thing around here. People use 'sorry' constantly in events where they are neither apologizing nor are they offering sympathy. I thought it's a Canadian thing.

You good man, my only possible complaint ever would be that you took us to Outback once. You came a long way from bloomin' onions. If anything I was prolly an angry, mean and untalented poker player back in the days.

I think he was expressing sympathy
