Hmmm, not sure if the Brits have different terms.
As an American,
Holster = a type of carrying case, usually worn around the waist, or accross the chest, designed to carry a gun.
Waistband = the bit of fabric that runs along the top of a pair of pants.
In lieu of wearing a holster, some folks will just tuck their gun into the top of their pants. Thus, someone who suddenly reached for their waistband, could, theoretically, be reaching for a gun.
