This was a huge dog and pony show. The cynical side of me wouldn't even be surprised if McCain voting against it was staged by the Republicans.

Once the Republicans gained control it was obvious they had a huge problem holding on to their promise of eliminating Obamacare. Obamacare is a freaking Republican plan from the start. It was born in the early 90s and even used by Romney in his state.

They were never seriously wanted to take health care away from all these people. It would have been political suicide. A bunch of dumbass Trump supporters were counting on them not doing. How often did you hear people say I voted for Trump but didn't think he'd really kill Obamacare! Once it looked possible people started freaking out.

The Republicans were going to lose either way. They either fail on their promise and their base gets mad or they eliminate health care and everyone gets mad.

How many Republicans voted for it but only if they were assured it wouldn't pass(lol!)

McCain ran on repeal and replacing Obamacare, he voted for killing it many times.

They got lucky McCain is terminal and could kill this whole thing. Hey we tried but McCain stopped us!

Sure the Republicans look stupid and like losers but had they killed health care it would have been a monumental disaster.

The cherry on top is McCain gets to look like some kind of hero as a going away present.
This a good post. The Republicans got hurt by this (badly)but it may be less than they would have otherwise. The Republicans will spin and deflect of course. Never could see how they could get to 51 but they came damn close, closer than I thought they would.

All the over the top vitriol directed at McCain on this forum is disgusting given the stature and credentials McCain has compared to the credentials of your typical anonymous internet poster but heh haters gonna hate. At the end of the day my take is that McCain just thought the whole process and strategy behind the skinny repeal was BS and corrupt. He wasn't going to have any of it.

Want to have more people on the exchanges? Raise the fines and strengthen enforcement. Want to strengthen the exchanges, bring rates down? Pour more money into individual subsidies and subsidies for insurance companies. Want to strengthen Medicaid? Increase reimbursement rates substantially. Now try to sell all that including how it will be paid for. GL.

Remember that time your beloved President with 0 military credentials said he liked pilots that didn't get captured? No1curr about your faux tone policing when you cheer on and empower offensive assclowns and elect a veritable 4chaner President. Sorry bro, whatever shreds of moral credibility you never had but might imagine you did were discarded in 2016. lol at thinking you ever, ever get these kind of arguments again with a straight face in your lifetime. Go see your way to the total work of @realdonaldtrump then go away and sit in shame at the thought you have any kind of credibility for this. This is your country and your President. It's cruel, it's stupid, it's mean. Own it bro.

It's not that they didn't want Trump to kill Obamacare. They really did. They hated that some black guy shoved this new health care law down their throat, and believed it was solely responsible for their premiums going up. They honestly believed his nonsense campaign promise that he would replace it with something better..."something something health savings accounts...something something $12/month. "

The problem is that free market systems completely fail at ensuring everyone gets access to quality affordable healthcare. It does nothing to keep costs in line. But the GOP has no other ideas. Their whole premise is that if you just get government out of the way of markets everything will be sunshine and lollipops, which is a complete lie when it comes to healthcare. There's literally no realistic solution to getting everyone health coverage that isn't on some level socialism. As we've seen, the GOP is stuck between a rock and hard place both trying to do something about Obamacare which they've spent 8 years telling their base is a horrible disaster, and ruining health care for millions, which their base will know is a disaster.

There's populist ideas on both sides of the aisle, but the dems win this one. Obamacare, and even further left wing socialized healthcare ideas are much more popular than anything that aligns with the GOPs core beliefs. Trump's campaign promises of replacing Obamacare with something better were not possible without sacrificing those same core beliefs in free markets. So they tried to thread the needle on some sort of bizarre GOP compromise, and here we are. Like someone else said in this thread, the GOP is better off sticking to their meat and potatoes ideas that their base can get behind, like kicking out immigrants, screwing the poor, and locking up minorities, and just let the dems handle health care.

*In the cadence of "down goes Frasier"* McCain votes no, McCain votes no!

Fell asleep somewhere around the 52-48 vote to not send it to committee. Very pleasantly surprised to see what happened after. That McCain video is elite.

All the news is focused on the Mooch interview, even NPR. Noting about whatever the **** just happened with healthcare. Just infuriating.

i'm planning to call Collins' and Murkowski's offices today and thank them both for voting the way they did. they deserve 1000x more credit than McCain.

They're definitely going to try and accelerate the collapse of the ACA now by doing things that screw over the exchanges like in the tax reform they'll have some sort of addendum that jacks up taxes on them so they're forced to increase premiums further

McCain is Roose (Bolton)

"Send Aetna my regards," quipped Lord McCain of the Brainfart as he drove the dagger into Ser Mitch's belly.

Agreed. Plus there is speculation McCain was just covering for his colleagues who were too chicken crap to do the right thing. This whole event has been a morality disaster for the GOP and Collins is probably the only one who deserves unwavering credit.

Once it's clear that repeal can't even get 50 votes in the Senate, that changes the entire political calculus of the bill. As Paul Ryan said, "We have to accept that Obamacare is the law of the land". And every calculation has to go from there.
Law of the Land should be in thread title

I can easily buy this. He was just reelected and probably won't finish his term. He had nothing to lose, but many of the others did.
