Lol at believing a word that comes out of McConnell's mouth. Susan Collins obviously didn't learn the first time.

This is the same reason why a shutdown for DACA doesn't work*. Most people only support DACA because its the right thing to do and it costs them nothing. As soon as you inconvenience them they don't give a ****.

* At least this time - I think they're setting themselves up for a slightly better position next time while also giving the Republicans the chance to shoot themselves in the foot.

re: The Great Government Shutdowns of 2018

The Ds do not have the power to force Rs do anything mechanically, Rs would nuke the filibuster to open the government before they gave up something they really cared about. Whether a shutdown was good or not, depends on whether it changed anyone in the public's mind. The unpopularity of the R's position on DACA and of Rs generally right now is already baked in, I don't think the shutdown was making them more unpopular, it was a stalemate at best for Ds, imo.

So think it was strategically fine to take very minor concessions, regroup and try again in a few weeks. Tbh, going into this shutdown I think they were more focused on working out an an actual deal with Dumb Donnie than messaging a shutdown. Hope they come out stronger next time, especially as many of the R's weak excuses will be gone by then.

The 2p2 theory is that the shutdown strategy was going awesome and they were about to win, but then they surrendered for no reason, maybe they just don't understand parliamentary tactics as well as internet randoms.

re: The Great Government Shutdowns of 2018

I'm reading the bill being voted on includes long term funding for CHIP and repeals several health care taxes. The Republicans are obviously never passing any immigration reform bill that moves policy to the left and funding the government for only 3 weeks isn't very significant one way or the other. So the deal today really should be seen as Democrats trading away health care taxes to get CHIP funded. That will be the lasting effect after the promised immigration negotiations fail to produce a deal. If the next shutdown is avoided or ended by Democrats agreeing to Stephen Miller approved immigration policies in exchange for restoring the same protections dreamers had previously (but no more) we better see more than a blue wave in November. There needs to be a progressive wave within the party itself or WAAF.

democrats had 59 votes in the senate and could only pass things that republicans wanted, but now republicans have 51 votes and it's still a one-way street toward republican policy goals. democrats = morons

I take it "chastises" is a euphemism for something far stronger.

Tbh, Rs are ****ed in the midterms as is. If I was vile and immoral hack that hated immigrants anyway like most of them, I'd probably be happy rolling the dice with a high variance strategy of shutting down the government in a DACA fight. Then using my control of government agencies to spread vile and despicable lies.

But for now Democrats have resolved not to stand up and cheer that line. Check back in a few days to see if Schumer caved.

re: The Great Government Shutdowns of 2018

Also, unfortunately, I don't think stories like those of the Polish man being deported or individual stories about DREAMers are going to change the minds of many who have thus far rationalized staying on the Trump Train. I worry that instead this effect will kick in:

Quote:
The practice of Franklin, where he got approval from someone by maneuvering him into treating Franklin favorably, works viciously well in reverse. When one is maneuvered into deliberately hurting some other person, one will tend to disapprove or even hate that person. This effect, from Inconsistency-Avoidance Tendency, accounts for the insight implicit in the saying: “A man never forgets where he has buried the hatchet.”

The effect accounts for much prisoner abuse by guards, increasing their dislike and hatred for prisoners that exists as a consequence of the guards reciprocation of hostility from prisoners who are treated like animals. Given the psychology-based hostility natural in prisons between guards and prisoners, an intense, continuous effort should be made to prevent prisoner abuse from starting and to stop it instantly when it starts, because it will grow by feeding on itself, like a cluster of infectious disease. More psychological acuity on this subject, aided by more insightful teaching, would probably improve the overall effectiveness of the U.S. Army.

I could sort of come around to a view of the wall as a giant WPA-type arts project, along the lines of Cristo's outdoor exhibitions, intended to bring employment to impoverished areas. I think I could get behind that.

Also, if there's a big ole wall, can we lay off like 25% of ICE?

Last edited by simplicitus; 01-22-2018 at 06:49 PM. Reason: I actually couldn't get behind that; too wasteful. What about a wall of broadband?

As Dara Lind has explained, even with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program still in effect, the Trump administration is actually rounding up long-settled undocumented immigrants faster than the court system can process their deportation cases. One odd result of this is that the pace of deportations has actually slowed since the Obama years, since Immigration and Customs Enforcement is picking up fewer easily deportable border crossers and throwing more internal enforcement cases into the court backlog.

Adding hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients to the pile of potentially deportable immigrants — on top of the 57,000 Hondurans, 59,000 Haitians, and 260,000 Salvadorans Trump has already moved to deprive of Temporary Protected Status — will not in any way increase the pace of aggregate removals. It will only divert resources from potential deportations of other undocumented immigrants whose educational credentials, English-language skills, and assimilation into American society are inferior to those of the DREAMers.

And Republicans are complicit in every murder committed in a mass shooting.

Of course despite the consistency in that statement, Republicans will spout some fake news thing and **** off.

This. Also, who does everyone think gets hurt the most during a government shutdown? Hint: It's not rich donor-class republicans. It's poor people and minorities who rely on federal government services, or who are employed by the federal government in low paying jobs that cause them to live paycheck to paycheck and rely on that paycheck.
