It was quite the sight when I found out why my son was crying.

Supreme Court to hear partisan gerrymandering cases again in March. This could be it.

This one's easy:

Quote:
The North Carolina map was drawn by Republicans, the Maryland districts by the state’s dominant Democrats.
SCOTUS finds NC maps constitutional, Maryland maps unconstitutional
01-05-2019 , 12:12 AM
Nah SCOTUS can find both constitutional and skull**** Democrats. Gerrymandering favors rural voters and Republicans big time. Also most of the states which have non-partisan district strategies are blue.
01-05-2019 , 12:48 AM
I assumed goofy was joking but yeah that is obviously the most likely outcome. If SCOTUS rules that gerrymandering is good to go then it could seriously be gg for the rest of our lives.

On a more optimistic note, I was happy to see house Democrats included a fix to gerrymandering in the first bill they put forth today. I think they're starting to see the urgency.
01-05-2019 , 12:52 AM
Yeah I'm starting to wish they did that back when they had the presidency, House and 60 seats in the Senate.
01-05-2019 , 01:18 AM
I don't like it, but gerrymandering has been around as long as the country has, so I can't imagine it not being determined unconstitutional to be the end of politics as we know it.

So in their own words - all these R politicians honestly believe voter ID laws help swing close elections.

Any Voter ID supporters wanna take a stab at why they believe this?

Cliffs: there was an unexplainable drop-off in votes from Governor to Lt. Governor in the 2018 election in black neighborhoods, specifically on election day. The drop-off has nothing to do with the ballot format, like in Florida. The number of missing votes could be more than the margin of victory.

I think it's time to end the idea of anonymous voting. No one is going to kill you for your vote in the US. Everyone should be able to track their own vote throughout the system and make sure it was recorded correctly.

Or at least everyone gets a confirmation # and you can use that to track your vote and make sure it was recorded correctly.
02-10-2019 , 02:51 AM
If the ballot is public:
Your employer will fire you for your vote.
A big tech company will kill all your services for your vote.

Public is not required. What matters is can you audit the vote. Without that there is no reason to believe any results.
02-10-2019 , 02:59 AM
It's illegal for your employer to fire for a whole host of reasons now. I see no reason why your vote can't be added to that.

But sure - remain anonymous but at least you get a confirmation # which you can look up at any time. Why don't we have that?
02-10-2019 , 03:00 AM
You don't need the threat of death to make that a terrible idea. Scrapping anonymous voting makes it incorrect to vote if the threat of any negative consequences exceeds the marginal value of your vote. You would be suppressing basically all rational thinkers.
02-10-2019 , 03:04 AM
Sure ok. It was a dumb idea.

But - you get an anonymous confirmation # that you can use to audit your vote at any time. Everyone agrees that's a good thing right?

So the employer just says that it's for something different. The only way this is enforceable is if the employer does something dumb.
02-10-2019 , 03:11 AM
Yes which they could do now but amazingly they almost never do because it's ****ing illegal and it's not worth the hassle. Also with social media your boss almost certainly either a) knows your political affiliation or b) (most likely) doesn't care.

But again NEVER MIND.

Let's just get confirmation #s or something.

Its kind of amazing we haven't had have this for a long time. A few years ago (prior to 2016) I talked to someone who worked at a company that made voting machines and software. I asked him about security concerns and he looked at me like I was from Mars. They had some ancient government regulations to adhere to but didn't seem interested at all in information security.
