The GOP war on voting The GOP war on voting

I mean there is literally no way that one office could service all of Birmingham. You'd wait in line for days to get a learner's permit for your kid.

Just to make sure, DMV could in an admittedly super theoretical world service most of driver license needs online right? You know, like we do in first world countries?

This is Alabama, one of the poorest states in the country though, you can't take it for granted that people have access to the Internet.

The State has just recently began providing some online DMV services like driver license and vehicle tag registration renewals.

Absolutely, not condoning shutting down any offices. Even so, solid mostly self-service online services should help alleviate some of the traffic to the physical offices in more urban areas. In an even more theoretical world this could be measured and offices stay open where residents are less likely to use online services, but then again that would go against the goal of closing these offices in the first place.

Well that's good to hear at least!

I'm sure it will be easy enough for white people to get their kids driver's licenses - one way or the other.
08-30-2015 , 09:35 PM
A new ID or a new car title and registration still means a trip to the office. As does boating and other licensing.

The whole AL budget is a falling apart mess and alls we get from the majority republicans is their usual peddling of principles and no-tax worshiping. Well, unless it's sin tax on crap like soda and cigarettes. Lol Princip-lols.

You cannot get a new driver's license or state issued ID card online. You can renew an existing one online. For Junior's learner's permit or Aunt Gussie's ID which she never needed before but now needs in order to vote, enjoy your day trip if you live in Demopolis.

Alabama republican talk radio suggests that they believe if you think voter ID doesn't stop voter fraud you are an idiot and they are great because of voter ID. No wonder there is a trend of liking Donald Trump.

The ease of which hundreds of people will show up to fake vote is really super imaginable to these people; despite that fact it is actually a challenging proposition if imagined as a caper. One which leaves all sorts of potential evidence as you have to do it in person and in public.

One test to them is how does their idea stand up if it doesn't include calling people stupid idiots and imagined suspicions?

Disenfranchised voters seems like sport to these people. They are winning therefore you get to have a voter ID to vote because of our fictional scenarios benefit our winning and we make fun of you because we are winning.

The mid-morning guys on one station had this liberal guy who had a liberal show last 12 days in their time slot on. Too his credit the liberal guy held with the facts of virtually non-existent in person voter fraud. They still laughed and called him stupid. Then one republican called in and said he was stupid and then admitted it was just that republicans are the majority and make fun of stupid liberals .

Mitch McConnell may be under investigation for two felonies related to voter intimidation and misinformation.

Wisconsin militia promises(-ed?) to prowl the states worst areas (while toting guns ldo, NOT to intimidate) looking for liberal tax dodgers trying to vote. Only liberals though. They don't care if conservative tax dodgers vote.

America.

Where'd you hear this?

There aren't any gun crazies in or around Madison, and I highly doubt the Waukesha/Washington county gun lovers are going to be venturing into the city of Milwaukee to sit outside polling places in the ghetto.

Good luck finding a sizeable population of liberals outside Madison/Milwaukee.

I'm pretty sure you just made this up.

Well that was certainly hard to find.

My guess is this will hinge on what one considers a gun nut.

Except that article is from 2014, and it didn't happen?

What didn't happen? He said a group said they were going to do it and you said he made that up. That they didn't actually go through with it really wouldn't matter.

You accused him of making it up which was clearly false.

Theoretically, we could just have a citizen identification database and have poll workers bring up your picture and information online when you go in to vote so you don't have to carry your ID with you.
09-07-2015 , 03:35 PM
In Iowa you can register on election day without ID. You need another registered voter to sign papers swearing they know who you are and where you live.

I may have missed this in another thread, but Florida GOP working overtime to synergize the GOP's three favorite tactics: gerrymandering, imprisoning black people, and disenfranchising voters. It's like the Oreo cookie of GOP strategy:

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/muckrak...gerrymandering

Quote:
Politico reported that state Rep. Janet Adkins (R) made the suggestion regarding U.S. Rep. Corrinne Brown's (D) district in a closed-door meeting of the North Florida Republican caucus.

“It's a perfect storm," Adkins said on the audio recording. "You draw it in such a fashion so perhaps, a majority, or maybe not a majority, but a number of them will live in the prisons, thereby not being able to vote."

Adkins made sure there were no reporters in the room before she made her comments, according to the report.

Cue:

- felons and ex felons SHOULD NOT BE VOTING, they broke the law. Disenfranchise forever
- blacks, well, they're terrific, but many are no angels
- there is absolutely no coordinated effort to disenfranchise racial minorities, liberals made that up. But hey, you know, if in 2020 when Tea Party controlled state houses draw districts with scraggly lines that extend for hundreds of miles to pack every state prison into Democratic districts, that's just the gerrymandering game, don't hate the playa, hate the game, nothing you can do about it, DEMOCRATS DO IT TOO
- p.s., make sure to bring 3 state issued IDs to vote, as every citizen surely has. If you don't, we've conveniently left open a state ID issuing office for one half hour every other month in a remote suburb. Let me get you a bus map. WE WILL SUBSIDIZE DISCOUNTED BUS FARES FOR THE POORS, IT'S JUST COMMON SENSE TO HAVE IDS, OK?

Florida's an absolute mess as usual and I can see this easily winding up in federal court. The state courts have repeatedly ordered them to redraw the districts per the FL constitution and the GOP is just ignoring the courts. One of the teahadist reps from the northwest panhandle has openly called for the legislature to defy the courts because **** you that's why.

Why isn't the gerrymandering done by an independent third party?

I assume you mean "Why isn't the redistricting done by an independent third party?" because gerrymandering by definition is crafting electoral districts for partisan political gain.

Some states have turned over redistricting to independent groups, but most haven't. The reasons are pretty obvious: the party in power doesn't want to give up their leverage over the process.

Most independent third parties are not involved in politics.
