In election years every person eligible to vote automatically gets sent a voter card well in advance of election day. When voting show the voter card and ID at your designated local polling place. If you don't have an ID someone you know can vouch for you and they show their ID.
To vote in the national parliament election you need citizenship but for local municipal elections you need only to have been living in the municipality for at least three consecutive years, same goes for elections to the local health care governing body.
Elections are held on Sundays where polling places are open 8 am 'til 8pm and ample opportunity is given to vote ahead of time by visiting any of a number of pre-election day polling places. Nationwide every party with at least 4 % of the total vote is given a proportional number of seats in (the one chamber) parliament.
Voter turnout in elections to the national parliament:
Lowest: 2002 = 80.1 %
Highest: 1976 = 91.8 %
Latest: 2014 = 85.8 %
