That’s a lot of institutionalized child abuse for a good school. I think I’d rather have my kids in a school that practiced corporal punishment than one that subjects them to this.

Yes. It's all dumb. If they smell smoke or see fire they get to leave. Otherwise someone checks to see if there's a shooter and I guess there's a signal. After some time barring any signal they are supposed to leave.

Fire risk is awfully small as well, but it's all absurd. It will do no good. No one will act any better because of it. It makes everyone think they need it/scared. If they do enough of it, at some point a cop will accidentally shoot someone. And it probably makes school shootings more likely.

I had a school shooting dream last night. It didn't get too far into it before I woke up, but I'm happy with my performance. I was ready to go rescue kids.

I've been in two false alarm active shooter scares at work. It's pretty stressful even as an adult, I don't want to think about what this does to young people. To say nothing of the kids who live through real-world school shootings.

Take a moment to truly appreciate how vile and irredeemable Republicans are for going out of their way to mock school shooting survivors.

It wasn't a surprise drill.

A couple years ago they had a huge rash of false alarms and lockdowns. My eldest, who is a bit prone to freak out, did in fact freak out.

Let me get this straight: This wasn't just for the shooter drill?

Like, it's standard procedure when the fire alarm goes off to just stay in the room?

I like having something to talk about when I see someone I haven't seen for a long time.

I like posting my pics and seeing how many likes they get.

It's brought me closer with anti-Trump friends and pretty much driven away all the Trumpers (who happen to be on FB).

I could not miss Facebook less but that’s because I use Instagram the way I used to use FB - post a pic here and there and be done with it.

We sure about those percentages? Seems more likely an active shooter using fire alarm for cover is a more likely occurrence usa2019 than a fire where the alarm was the difference between life and death.

If it were me I would want more evidence before bolting out of a classroom.

People have to understand that this is becoming SOP for school shooters. One thing we know is school shooters often study previous shootings. Pulling the alarm is in playback.

You know when a fire alarm goes off and most of the time people think it is a false alarm. Most people don’t immediately think fire get out, because most people have only ever experienced false alarms.

Anyways this just escalates to future shooters setting actual fires to support the alarm and get everyone panicked and running so they can be shot.

In the possible scenarios (fire, shooter, false alarm) which one is the most time sensitive? I don’t know. My guess is shooter.

Where I work they have separate alarms for fire alarms, shooters, toxic gas leaks, etc. Though I doubt many schools have the resources to have someone managing a system like that.

Fire risk is awfully small as well, but is magnitudes more likely than an active shooter.

No, both percentages are clearly wrong, but I feel pretty safe that the risk of fire is magnitudes more than the risk of shooter. There were about 5k school fires from 2011-2015. https://www.nfpa.org/News-and-Resear...nal-properties

That is magnitudes greater than the number of school shootings. There were 23 in 2018 in the US, the worst year on record: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-46507514

You are correct. If there is a fire alarm they are to wait in their room until a signal that it's clear to leave, they smell smoke, or enough time passes that they decide it's now sufficiently unlikely that a shooter is waiting to pick them off. (tbf I think it's 1 minute and this is not actually likely to cause them to wait until it's too late, but hell, maybe some kids will decide it's smarter to hide in a closet and let everyone else take their chances while they wait for the fire.)

So what happens when all the liberals leave FB and it's nothing but old white supremacists spreading hate propaganda to people that just want to post pictures of their cats? Seems like that could come back to haunt us in 2020

What bobman said. It's not about the relative risk of fire vs. shooter. Neither are anything close to likely. If fire drills meant hiding for a couple hours and being marched out with your hands up by SWAT teams, armored personnel carriers, and fire fighters pointing automatic weapons at the children, I wouldn't want them having any fire drills either.

Oh, I agree with this. I was just commenting on the stupidity of having a policy of ignoring fire alarms just in case it’s an active shooter.

It always depends. I don't really want to argue the other side, but I suspect a very small percentage of the fires are serious, almost no kids die in school fires. Injury rates from school fires is about the same as from school shootings, and my kid's school is probably less likely than most to have a serious fire (suburban, good access to fire dept, mostly concrete buildings, sprinklered, spread out campus with smaller buildings and mostly 1 story).
02-02-2019 , 04:03 PM
What are the procedures for making sure that the automatic weapons don't have any ammunition in them? Is it hopefully more than just telling the police/fire/SWAT personnel to unload their weapons?

Seems like an accident waiting to happen, with perhaps more chance of injury/death from the training exercise than from an actual school shooting.
02-02-2019 , 04:37 PM
Oh please, these are well trained professionals, I'm sure they would never **** around with their firearms and shoot someone in the chest accidentally while on duty...
