I feel like we take space exploration for granted. This is a panorama of Mars. It's a totally different planet than the one we live on. It's really far away. We sent robots there to take pictures and stuff. I think that's pretty god damn amazing.

That is a great view. I've lived all my life in the SW US so it looks like home to me. And it's possible life on Earth originated there so it isn't all that far away.

I go back and forth. We've done amazing things. But at the same time the technology seems crude and unreliable. We need near miraculous improvements to make interplanetary travel practical. Like emdrive and cold fusion level of breakthroughs.

One doesn't need to treat college like a trade school in order to secure a good job after graduation.

The Pluto flyby never got enough love from the public. Just a few years ago was the first time in history we ever had decent-quality images of wtf Pluto looks like.

Naw we could do it with 1960s technology using nuclear pulse propulsion aka throwing nuclear bombs behind the spaceship and have them push the ship along.

Conceded re: Philly sports fans but this is still way way way better than seeing the adopted team of basically the entire alt-right triumphing

I guess that commercial had some different MLK speech during the football game?

Yeah, it's on youtube. It wasn't MLK's voice though? Pretty lame to do an impression, on top of it being lame to use in a car commercial.

MLK stealing a bit from The Rolling Stones in Heuhue's version.

Looks like the ad was condensed from this portion of The Drum Major Instinct

Quote:
And so Jesus gave us a new norm of greatness. If you want to be important—wonderful. If you want to be recognized—wonderful. If you want to be great—wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. (Amen) That's a new definition of greatness.

And this morning, the thing that I like about it: by giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great, (Everybody) because everybody can serve. (Amen) You don't have to have a college degree to serve. (All right) You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. (Amen) You only need a heart full of grace, (Yes, sir, Amen) a soul generated by love. (Yes) And you can be that servant.

Quote:
King's "Drum Major Instinct" sermon, given on 4 February 1968, was an adaptation of the 1952 homily ‘‘Drum-Major Instincts’’ by J. Wallace Hamilton, a well-known, liberal, white Methodist preacher. King encouraged his congregation to seek greatness, but to do so through service and love. King concluded the sermon by imagining his own funeral, downplaying his famous achievements and emphasizing his heart to do right.

I love how this picture seems to be black and white at first glance, but then you notice the colors.

In other space news, the Falcon Heavy rocket has its test flight tomorrow (currently scheduled for 1:30). It's launching Elon Musk's Tesla to a Mars-distance orbit of the sun. Assuming all goes well, it will be:

-The fourth privately developed orbital rocket (behind the two earlier Falcon rockets and a New Zealand start-up)
-The most capable currently operational rocket for all missions other than Trolly's beloved launches of space probes to the outer planets.
-I can't find hard confirmation of this, but I think the payload will be the first private payload ever to leave earth orbit.
-The payload will be fourth fastest-moving wheeled conveyance ever, after the three Mars rovers.

The webcast will be at spacex.com/webcast and will be very worth watching. There will be a huge rocket launch, then boosters getting landed all over the place. And you can see a car in outer space.

Seems like they could have given some scientiticians a free satellite launch. So dumb to launch a freaking car into solar orbit
