anyway, good to see that elliot's brilliant "gotta ban two people just so I don't look biased" standard of modding is still being carried out.

Yeah. If I had all of the fiat currency US dollars in the world, I could buy a lot of farms, too.

The amount of trolling in the Ron Paul thread makes it clear that libertarians get a huge amount of leeway. I dont recall ever seeing a post by a couple of [undrafted] that isnt them sidling up to the thread, casually insult everyone for discussing topics and then stroll away unharmed.

I thought basically everything buffett had to say about share buybacks was pretty dicey.

I think that's probably the rule that gets broken the most often without consequence. Including this post, now that I think about it.

Yeah I was pretty shocked to see that stuff in his annual report. I think it was just 'I'm getting old as ****, I'm just gonna let it fly.' Pretty counter-intuitive and assumes that earnings flow through to shareholders, which is often false. That said, he only invests in companies with managers he likes, i.e. ones that are likely to pay meaningful dividends or otherwise use the money wisely.

lol

Rules nittery from the #1 player of the "all those mean people report my posts" card.

Cliffs on what happened and who got banned?

I got banned last week for freestyle rap/poetry because it was so awesome, although technically I think it was labeled "way over the line personal attack."

If I tell you I'll have to kill you (translation: I'll get banned)

The Stratfor Guide to Useful, Baffling and Strange Intelligence Terms

This is the first release by wikileaks from their collection of hacked emails from the global security firm Stratfor. It's a pretty entertaining read.

Mod note: I am aware linking to a wikileaks file will, at the very least, raise an eyebrow, but this is pretty harmless stuff.

Oh you sly rebel linking, gasp, wikileaks!

Hey, I'm not the one so uptight that he decided a poker forum needed to censor naughty words. I'm just trying to play by the rules.

Buffett's point is that you can buy productive assets instead of gold and come out ahead. Which is obvious of course but a lot of people are stuck in a false dichotomy between fiat money and gold.

In what way? He basically said that buybacks are worthwhile sometimes and not so much other times. It wasn't that controversial at all.
02-27-2012 , 07:21 AM
Most of the buyback talk is straight from The Intelligent Investor afaik.

I was thinking earlier about how every election is the most important election of our lifetime. I think this election may actually be the least important of my lifetime (i'm in my early 30s)

I was eligible to vote for Bush/Gore, Bush/Kerry, Obama/McCain, and Obama/Someone

I feel as though even though we may not have known at the time, Bush/Gore probably was the most important election I was able to vote in. I feel Bush/Kerry and Obama/McCain were less important than Bush/Gore, but the trajectory of the country could have been changed to a degree depending on who won.
This election, I feel the trajectory of the country has the lowest possibility of change depending on who gets elected.
I'm taking into account most likely nominees for each side as well as their chance of winning.

Considering who Gore's running mate was, I'm not sure how much different things would be if he had won. And the Gore of 2012 isn't the Gore of 2000. He ran as something of a social conservative iirc.

You're underestimating the importance of not putting GWB into the Whitehouse.
02-27-2012 , 03:35 PM
Don't forget that it's not just the president and vice prez in the decisionmaking. Bush surrounded himself with the type of advisors Gore wouldn't have, and he appointed SCOTUS justices Gore wouldn't have touched.

Man these higher gas prices are ****ting all over obamas approval ratings. Latest is at 45, mitt winning head to head.

Really feel like Obama should have covered his ass on this front and let keystone XL go through

Wat? This was on Politico today, and the link at the end of this shows all the polls they could find with Romney losing all but one poll, in which he ties.
