Buckle up for a gop Civil War after tonight. Bannon wing already blaming tonight on the establishment, and establishment will be much more willing to turn on Trump now that there is some evidence that he is a political liability.

Huh? It's a state that's changed incredibly quickly. I'd give you 10-1 easily on the parlay of GOP wins VA + Dems win the white house in 2020. If Warren is the candidate and she loses VA she's screwed.

didn't you see trump's tweet? This outcome is simply because Gillespie didn't support Trump enough or whatever.

so the transgender person won? Cool. And the boyfriend of the TV reporter who was shot live on camera a few years ago is winning in a very Red district.

She's polling ahead but not by as much as would be hoped going into tonight.

edit: Chris Hurst was the boyfriend of Alison Parker, the reporter who was shot and killed live on air in 2015. His opponent was NRA-endorsed.

I meant we didn't need a super-liberal candidate for governor. I lived in Virginia a little over a decade ago, it's not super-liberal. Edit: Wasn't saying Warren couldn't win for president there, was using her as example of someone too liberal to be governor there.

Krasner winning as prosecutor in Philly running on a Black Lives Matter platform is huge for like, meaningfully improving people's lives.

Also Medicaid expansion looks like it'll win in Maine.

I see the GOP is in the midst of a bloodbath tonight. Sending thoughts and prayers.

Scared the Destablishment takeaway will be to run deplorable lite campaigns

This one is amazing. A progressive civil rights attorney with zero prosecutorial xp and made a living suing police is the DA in Philly.

Pretty cool to see how VA has moved from red to purple to leaning blue in less than 20 years. I wonder if NC could be next, if they can ever get past the incredibly corrupt GOP there.

This is realignment type stuff. GOP Congress will be running verrrry scared for the next 12 months. I don't really think they have a play, except maybe retirement our owning up to Trump, saying "my bad," and voting to impeach down the road (this is a fantasy, but it seems like the avenues of retreat for the GOP are largely cut off.)

The only hope they can find is that, I believe, Virgina is more educated and upwardly mobile than most states. Still, Trump has 12 more months to fail at everything, and even non-political folks seem to be getting the message.

It is only going to get worse for the GOP.

Please stop with the "Warren is too liberal to _____". It's a bull**** right wing talking point. You're buying their lies and doing their work for them.

The key takeaway is that voters really responded to Northam's mild, non-partisan tone and his willingness to work with Trump when appropriate.

No, we need to run candidates who can win and not make the republican mistake of primarying our winning candidates. Elizabeth Warren is great and I would vote for her for president. She should not be running for governor in red states however. There's a reason we have a democratic senator in West Virginia who looks like he will be re-elected, and its not because of how liberal he is. But having someone who is a "D" is important even if they are a conservative "D," see: for example: the failure of Obamacare repeal.
