Was told this week by a newbie Ivy League grad in HR that he was surprised how seriously his fortune 100 company took complaints.

I worked at a big bank; EVP was openly racist and said he wouldn’t lend money to black people, got reported to HR and they fired the reporting party and retained the exec. Lol banks.

When was that? That sounds like it would be a huge deal today, like, really bad stories in the press and heads rolling.

Like, that's not to say it couldn't happen today, but there's a staggering liability (in the press) they're opening themselves up to by doing that, and presumably it hasn't bitten them yet.

About 5 years ago. The exec was super connected politically right up to the CEO; shortly after this incident they moved him to a different group. Was pretty eye opening to me because when it got reported to HR I assumed it would be an instant **** canning, nope, exact opposite. Was very eye opening.

Hey stop lolling at our mace, it's there because of... ah I mean it's important for .... ok forget it.

Mace >>>>>>>>>> POTUS

I see it's been covered, but all the AIs are super racist because they learn from training data. The training data comes from the real world. The real world is super racist, we just pretend it isn't.

It's not bad design or bad implementation, the AI is learning our reality.

If you want your AI to not be racist, that's a hard problem. Good luck finding large data sets that aren't full of racism.

I'm really interested in the possibility of algorithms like that being incorporated into social science research, as a kind of research method.

How do you think the results would look if we seeded our AI with a text dump of 2+2?

Poor and vulnerable people are far more likely to be convicted of a crime than others who commit crime at the same rate.

It is pretty hilarious, but let's not forget you guys have a thing every year where your head of state issues a pardon to a game fowl.

The mace is there as this like symbol of Parliamentary authority or something? John McDonnell, a fairly well hard-left member of the Opposition, picked it up and put it down on the Labour front bench. What he was thinking, who knows. Why people care so much, who knows. You have to remember England is a place where the judges still wear wigs and ****.

The mace is a ceremonial symbol of the authority of the Queen. Parliament is not allowed to meet without it being there. Obviously, picking up that sort of thing and walking off with it isn't the done thing.

And honestly while it's kind of funny, you'd have to say 2018 isn't the best year on record for Americans to be laughing at the idiocies of other people's political systems.

Speaking of weirdness and Americans, my pub quiz the other night had a question "In the United States, what does a menu mean if it says something is served "a la mode"? I did not know the answer, and lol at calling it that.
