I don't understand how the most diverse/mixed country in the world could elect this douchebag.

well this didn't take long. apparently a guy was celebrating bolsonaro's win by shooting at the sky and accidentally shot a kid in the face.
one of bolsonaro's biggest things is that he wants to make it easy for people to own guns.

Has Trump congratulated Bolsonaro yet? He's totally going to.

bolsonaro posted on twitter that trump called to congratulate him.

US media already giving Bolsonaro a pass. NPR just ran a segment where they aired two soundbytes, one of a person saying "This election was about communism versus democracy, and democracy won" another of a different person saying "Bolsonaro reminds me of Donald Trump, and that frightens me."

Yep, you got it NPR. He's kinda like Donald Trump, and that's the only reason to oppose champion of democracy Jair Bolsonaro.

Re: "More open markets" tweet

When you consider tech companies are already looking to jump off the fence in support of authoritarian regimes (see Google developing censored search for China, Amazon's orwellian facial recognition security software, Microsoft pres. and Bezos both going to bat for developing AI-backed weapons systems for DOD, etc.), I imagine even the symbolic support of democracy and human rights by big multi-national corporations is going to collapse in short order when confronted with the size of markets that will be otherwise closed off.

For the first time, non-white people make up the majority of Brazil's population, according to preliminary results of the 2010 census. Out of around 191m Brazilians, 91 million identified themselves as white, 82m as mixed race and 15m as black. Whites fell from 53.7% of the population in 2000 to 47.7% last year.
well then...

How many of these "whites" would be considered "Mexicans" if they came to the US?

If you lived or had any family living in Brazil it would be easy to understand. The endemic corruption in the country was taken to the next level by the extreme left who was in power and by other center right parties.

The party took complete control of public companies like any communist country would.

The level of violence and insecurity is only getting worse in last few years.

They wanted to "liberate" the previous president Lula who is jailed because of corruption. They support Maduro of Venezuela and other dictators in South America.

That's a few of the reasons why figures like Bolsonaro appear. I'm even surprised he didn't get more than 60% of the vote, but considering most of the press (national and international) was against him I guess it was more difficult.

Yeah, it was the liberals' fault. And media.

My gf is half Brazilian and has lots of family living in Brazil. She, like most sane people, does not understand how they elected this lunatic. QED.

(idk about this theory, btw - "well the extreme left and center right didn't solve this problem, I guess the only solution remaining is to try the extreme right!" hahaha ok)

Pretty simple formula outsider + anti establishment (corruption in this case) + being tough on crime (fear is warranted in brazil) = that guy wins

A bit different in exit polling I presume like about half of women voted for bolsanaro and most of the youth while the olds actually didn't because they lived through the last one.

So when does Glem Grendelwald relocate to the Ecuadoran embassy (or actual Ecuador)?

This is a brilliant example of maliciously quoting something out of context. Here's the full quote, from which the answer to your disingenuous, dishonest, dare I say Bolsonaresque, question is readily apparent to anyone of minimal intelligence:

By the way, my read was right too, but I think the read was obvious to anyone who has any contact with ordinary Brazilians.

lol dude, if it was malicious I wouldn't have asked you for clarification. Calling him a nutjob doesn't preclude anyone from saying "at least he's not Lula/Dilma" if they think those people are worse, it's the Brazilian version of "at least Trump isn't Hillary".
