Right. I mean I think physicsand math are fun especially relative to other things that can become a career. I don’t think the same is true for philosophy. Both because all the interesting parts are now in math or science and because the career aspects are worse.

New Zealand has a unique solution to their own housing crisis

Quote:
In Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, home prices have nearly doubled since 2007, according to Bloomberg. With more people priced out of buying homes, rents have gone up and homelessness rates have soared. Across the country, homeownership rates recently hit their lowest levels since 1951.
Their response:

Quote:
On Wednesday, New Zealand passed a law that will prevent most foreigners from buying homes in the country, in the hope of addressing the ongoing affordability crisis. The ban had been one of the campaign promises championed by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the center-left Labour Party, who ran on a platform of reducing income inequality, combating homelessness and cutting back on immigration.

“If you’ve got the right to live in New Zealand permanently, you’ve got the right to buy here,” David Parker, New Zealand’s associate minister of finance, said in a speech before Parliament on Wednesday. “But otherwise, it’s not a right, it’s a privilege. We believe it’s the birthright of New Zealanders to buy homes in New Zealand, in a market that is shaped by New Zealand buyers, not by international price pressures.”
Daaaaaaaaamn

Seems extreme. How about a 30% tax when a foreigner buys a home in NZ and putting that money directly into credits whenever a legal resident buys a home?

Too late to keep peter thiel out unfortunately.

NYU medical school to give all students free tuition

Quote:
The New York University School of Medicine announced on Thursday that it would cover the tuition of all its students, regardless of merit or need, citing concerns about the “overwhelming financial debt” facing graduates.
Quote:
The plan, effective immediately, covers all current and future students. Annual tuition is roughly $55,000. There are 93 first-year students, and another 350 students who have up to three years left before obtaining their degrees. (A small group of new and current students who are enrolled in joint M.D./Ph.D. programs already have their tuitions paid for, thanks to the National Institutes of Health.)

California has some pretty strict supply chain regulations that require retailers to certify their products aren't made with slave labor. I worked for a mail order retailer a few years back, and we had several products we could not send to California as a result.

Subsidising purchases as a solution for soaring house prices is like trying to put out a fire by pouring gasoline on it.

Nice to see those 100 people who graduated at the top of their class at Harvard or Yale finally catch a break!

There's a lot of interest in Tesla's business around here. This may have an impact. Their energy storage business seems to be growing pretty fast. There is certainly plenty of interest.

You have to be accepted to medical school before you have to pay for medical school.

Yeah, I thought about that, but you're also depressing prices when you tax the purchases. Don't you think?

If their problem is foreigners speculating or using housing stock as a store of value (I've read this is a problem with Chinese investors in Vancouver?) then it might be a solid solution.

I'm gonna go out on the sturdiest limb and say, despite knowing literally nothing about Auckland, that their real problem is that they aren't building enough housing.

If Auckland's problems are anything like Ireland's, then it's not enough to simply increase production volume via the same modes of production that are currently dominant. Incentivise a bunch of developers to build more housing than they're currently building, and they'll build even more housing of the exact same type as they're currently building - primarily high-end, luxury-type accommodation.

You need to increase supply, sure. But you also need to change the nature of the supply - you need publicly funded social housing, and lots of it. The market will not save us.

Yeah? I'm not sure I think depressing house prices is a bad idea. Rising house prices amount to a redistribution of wealth from young to old.

Yeah, capital flight from China is a problem both in NZ and here.
